When Maria heard the conversation, she felt an unspeakable pain in her heart.

She felt really sorry for Liam.

It turned out that every family was different. Not everyone could live happily without worries.

Not every parent was willing to dedicate their all to their children; some would only demand.

Why did Liam's mother need so much money?

She didn't want to make any wild speculations just from a few words from a phone call as she didn't know the full story.

Her heart still ached, and she felt like she was suffocating inexplicably.

"I already told you I don't have any money left. I've given you all that I had. 50 million dollars. I've given you all the savings I had left. If you're still not satisfied, there's nothing more I can do." Liam's voice sounded again.

Maria gasped a cold breath of air.

"Whatever. Do you think I'm afraid that you'll expose me now that I've hit rock bottom? Do whatever you like. You won't get a single penny more after you've used it all." Liam said coldly, word by word, "I don't care. I'm not the parasite anyway, and it's not like I'm afraid of ending up with nothing. In fact, I've never had anything from the very beginning."

Maria was upset hearing that. She couldn't help clenching her fists.

"No matter what, I should still send you my regards. You gave birth to me after all. Bye."

The call seemed to have ended.

Maria was so scared that she quickly turned away.

She hurriedly went back to the table, picked up the glass, and downed the wine.

Even though she knew she wasn't supposed to drink red wine like that, Maria still couldn't stop herself from wanting more. Only by doing so could she control the overflowing sadness in her. It was too unbearable.

How could Liam have such a mother?

She couldn't show it out. She couldn't let Liam know she had heard the phone call.

She lowered her head and munched on the cake, yet her eyes were incredibly sore. She wanted to cry, not for herself, but him.

A minute later, Liam appeared at the door. He smiled and said with an apologetic tone, "Sorry, I went to pick up a call."

Maria looked at him subconsciously. She noticed his smile was particularly bright.

At that very moment, Maria felt as if there were thousands of knives piercing right through her heart.

It was more than familiar to her.

Because she was used to hiding her true feelings and thoughts with a bright smile like that, most of the time.

She didn't want anyone to see her fragile side.

But when she saw Liam doing so, she felt really upset.

Although he was covering his desolate heart with a smile, hiding everything perfectly with a light curve on his lips, yet she could see that he wasn't happy deep down.

His eyes were gloomy, and he was trying his best to hide the sadness inside him. However, the paleness and loneliness left behind from the faint smile still exposed him.

"It's okay." Maria couldn't bear to look at his face. She was afraid that she would feel sorry for him.

"It just so happened my mother called. I sent her my regards as per your request," he said in a soft voice. "She was very happy. Thank you, Maria."

Hearing this, Maria's eyelashes trembled slightly. She couldn't speak for a long while.

She continued stuffing her mouth with the cake, yet tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably.

Maria quickly bowed her head to cover it up as she didn't want Liam to see it.

However, Liam still noticed it. He fixed his eyes on her and asked, "What's wrong?" "Oh, nothing," Maria replied in a choked voice, trying her best to hide her sadness. "You are crying," he said.

"The cake is too good." Maria raised her head and smiled. It was worse than a cry. "I'm a little emotional because I've never had such a good cake, Liam. Don't worry, I'm fine. Really." Stunned, Liam looked at Maria quietly. The darkness in his eyes was gradually replaced by warmth, overflowing bit by bit.

He walked over and sat down beside her. He took some tissue from the table and wiped her tears for her.

"I can do it myself." She reached out her hand to take it from him, yet Liam shook his head and continued wiping her tears for her.

She soon started bursting into tears.

"Really, I'm just so useless. I'm afraid I won't be able to eat a cake like this anymore." She mumbled, trying to cover up. She was so flustered that she didn't know what else to say.

Seeing her reservedness and sadness, Liam said softly, "Will you be coming back next summer?"

Maria was stunned; she immediately nodded. "I will. I'll be back every summer and winter break."

"I'll make it again for you next time." He replied calmly, "It's just that I'm not sure whether I'll still be staying here next year."

"Why won't you? You have to keep a house for yourself so that you can survive." Maria said, feeling agitated, "You shouldn't tire yourself too much for others."

As soon as she finished her words, she noticed the smile on Liam's face froze. He furrowed his brows.

"You heard it, didn't you?" His tone was a little cold.

Maria was dumbstruck at once, she pursed her lips, and tears pooled in her eyes. "I heard it. Yes, I heard your conversation on the phone, Liam. That's why I'm so upset. I don't have any other intentions. I just feel sorry for you." "So be it then." Seeing how anxious she was, the stiffened smile on his face relaxed again; his eyebrows too. In the end, he fell into loneliness once more.

Maria could tell although he was calm, there was still a faint sadness hidden deep beneath his eyes.

"I... You..." Maria didn't know what else to say, so she could only pour some more wine for herself. "Let's... Let's drink. Let's get drunk and forget all the sorrows. I'll drink with you."

Seeing the sincerity in her eyes, Liam smiled gently and replied, "Okay, let's drink."

They slowly finished the bottle of red wine, and Maria's head was already spinning long ago.

The phone rang again.

But Maria was so muddled that she couldn't tell if it was her phone or Liam's that was ringing.

"It's your phone. Don't answer it." Muddle-headed, she thought if it was his mother, she would only be asking for money, and it would only upset him.

Somehow, the two of them have moved to the couch from the dining table. She reached for the ringing phone; the caller ID was saved as Mommy. Maria immediately turned off the phone.

There was only one thought in her mind; it was a call from Liam's mother, and she would definitely not let him answer it.

After that, she smiled proudly and threw the phone onto the carpet. "It's not ringing anymore. It's all right now."

Liam was also a little dizzy, but fortunately, he still had a sense of rationality. "I think that's your phone."

"Don't lie to me." Maria waved her hands and slipped from the sofa to the carpet. She leaned back against the sofa and sat by his side. She pouted and said, "I don't want to answer the phone. I don't want you to feel sad because of it. I'll feel sorry seeing you upset."

"Do you feel sorry for me that much?" He looked at her.

"Heart-wrenching." Maria waved her hands, her speech slurred but clear, "I wish I can bear the suffering for you."

Liam felt a tug in his heart; he fixed his gaze at Maria. Perhaps it was because of the alcohol his mind was somehow out of control. Or perhaps it was because he was feeling too sad and lonely on his birthday. He reached out and cupped her cheeks. She was the girl who cried for him, a girl who felt heartbroken because of him, and a girl who was willing to suffer on his behalf.

"What are you doing?" Maria pouted.

"Maria Lowe." Liam stared at her.

Seeing the familiar handsome face in front of her, Maria's breath tightened, and her heart skipped a beat.

She was still able to see clearly it was him.

She smiled, reached out a hand, and touched his face gently. "Liam, it's really you. You're so close. I must be dreaming."

As if to prove that she was in a dream, she shook her head, closed her eyes, and opened them again.

Then, she smiled foolishly. "Look, it's just a dream. Only in my dreams will you be so gentle to me." Liam's eyes narrowed and his brows moved slightly.

Maria suddenly moved closer to him, so close that he could clearly see the pores on Maria's face; delicate and beautiful.

"You know? We'd do things every time I dream about you." she chuckled embarrassingly, as she thought she was dreaming anyway, "I'm not afraid of letting you know anyway. I've already slept with you many times in my dream."
