Chapter 66:

Joshua gave a light chuckle. We were married for years. Bonds like that don't just disappear.

Jerald, always in tune with his son, understood without the need for words. He waved his hand dismissively, remembering his own past. They are only women. Have fun if you want. I'm not getting involved.

Joshua became serious. As for the Green family, I have everything under control. There will be no problems.

Jerald nodded. As long as you're safe.

His thoughts then drifted to Caden, frowning. Caden holds a grudge. I lost my temper today, and I'm not sure what I could do next. The way Caden had looked at him earlier reminded him too much of Caden's grandfather: intense, cold, and brooding. At only twenty-five years old, Caden seemed ready to take on the world.

Joshua, sensing Jerald's concern, reassured him: He's your son. What He Can Really Do If he had true power, he wouldn't have gone without a fight.

Jerald closed his eyes briefly, considering his son's words. Joshua handed him a glass of water and continued: I've been investigating Caden's assets abroad since he returned. He has hidden things well. I suspect he has some secrets.

Jerald frowned. What kind of secrets.

Something big. Financial problems or worse. His pride wouldn't allow him to return just to compete for an inheritance, unless there was something else.

Jerald's expression softened as the idea dawned on him. It made sense. Besides, given the scope of the Yates empire, why would Caden voluntarily renounce the inheritance

Still, as long as Jerald remained in control, Caden couldn't do anything.

We have to thank his mother, Jerald murmured, “giving me everything he had.” He looked at Joshua, offering him rare praise. Alicia reminds me of her.

Joshua smiled. Thanks to your guidance, Dad.

Jerald took a sip of water, thinking for a moment. He knew Joshua had a knack for pleasing people, but he also knew deep down that Joshua wasn't on Caden's level.

With a dismissive gesture, Jerald said, Come down and eat. I feel better. You no longer need to work so hard in the company. I can take care of everything.

Joshua's eyes darkened briefly, but he hid any emotion.

It's okay, Dad, Joshua replied calmly, hiding his thoughts. When he left the study, he saw Alicia leaning on a pillar in the hallway, clearly lost in thought.

Alicia, what are you doing here, he asked, approaching her. Noticing that something didn't fit, he added: You were scared.

Alicia wasn't pretending; I was really shocked. You were talking in there, but why did Jerald suddenly get angry?

Joshua shrugged, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. Caden has a bad temper, and always manages to irritate Dad. It's nothing new.

I see, Alicia murmured.

Outside, the rain beat against the windows, the sound deafening. The thunder rumbled loudly, making Alice's face even paler.

Joshua noticed her reaction and was amused. "It's just thunder," he said, laughing. Come on, let's eat.

Alicia, seeing how unaffected he was, asked nonchalantly: Do you like this weather?

Yes, Joshua answered, widening his smile. I like everything Caden fears.

Alicia's heart sank at his words.

She pressed: How could someone like Caden be afraid of thunder.

Joshua, in a good mood, responded: You know how his mother died.

Alicia clenched her fingers. No, he muttered under his breath.

Joshua almost laughed, clearly entertained by his own story. More than a decade ago, her mother died in childbirth in the hospital. It was pouring rain, and Caden was at the hospital entrance, soaked and almost struck by lightning.

Alicia froze, a chill running down her spine.

Images of a A similar scene flashed through his mind.

He felt an unexpected surge of compassion for Caden. Witnessing the sudden death of someone close was a pain that could never be forgotten, and yet Joshua seemed to find amusement in it.

At that moment, Alicia realized that she no longer recognized Joshua. Its coldness made it almost repulsive.

Joshua realized that she had stopped walking. What's wrong? Are you okay, he asked in a worried voice.

Alicia held on tightly and her fingers turned pale. I have caught a cold and my stomach doesn't feel very good. Go eat. I'll get some rest, she whispered.

Joshua's gaze softened and he asked, "A little cold is so annoying."

Alicia hesitated, unsure how to respond.

< p>Joshua looked at her knowingly. How about a little surprise tonight, he suggested, in an insinuating tone.

Alicia felt a surge of anger inside her, but before she could react, her phone buzzed.

Al Seeing Lilliana's name on the screen, Joshua gestured for Alicia to be quiet.

Alicia lowered her head, biting her tongue, and walked down the stairs.

Josué He seemed pleased by her silence. but, as a precaution, she retired to the bedroom to answer the call.

Alicia entered the living room, with a knot of anxiety tightening her chest.

The house was full of activity.

Everyone was busy preparing dinner.

No one noticed her.

In silence, Alicia grabbed a black umbrella and walked out the door.

He called a taxi and asked the driver to follow a familiar route.

Halfway through the trip, his eyes caught sight of Caden's Maybach, parked haphazardly on the street.

He made the taxi stop near a pharmacy and quickly got in to buy something.

When he returned, the Maybach had not moved. She paused for a moment, thoughtful, before approaching the car. He tapped lightly on the window. It took a few moments, but finally the window rolled down halfway.

Caden looked at her with a blank expression. What's wrong, he asked bluntly.
