The Twin Alphas’ Fated Mate
Fate of the Forsaken Brother Chapter 1

~Kaden-

I knock on the door of my brother's office. Not sure why he wants to see me, but I have to show up. It's Arthur, after all.

"Come in." Arthur calls. I open the door and there he sits behind his desk, arms crossed with his beta, Jack, behind him as always.

"You wanted to see me?" I say.

"Yes. Sit down." Arthur motions for me to sit in one of the chairs, so I do. "As you know, Maxton has been gone for two years."

"Yes, Alpha." I nod.

"Well, his time away at alpha training has come to an end. He is set to come home tomorrow." Arthur tells me. I can't help but smile. Arthur and Elliot may be my brothers by our father, but Maxton has always been my chosen brother. I don't see him as my nephew. We were raised together. I'm not even a full year older than him. I turned 18 nine months ago and Maxton will be 18 in just 2 short weeks.

Aside from Maxton being basically my brother, he's also one of my only friends. Macton and Devin. Maxton always had lots of friends, being the only son of the alphas, but me? People don't like me because of my father, Garret. Yes, the twins and I share a father, but I was born after he turned on Arthur and Elliot. And since he's dead, the pack blames the only person left behind after that. Me. Maxton has always defended me, telling people it's unfair to hate me for something that happened when I was only 2 months old. I agree, but I've gotten used to how people treat me. I've learned to ignore it. The same goes for Devin. His dad was once part of Garret's pack. Even though Daniel helped the Luna and was accepted into the pack by the alphas, some people still look down on Daniel and Devin. Maxton, Devin and I were all really close friends. When Maxton left two years ago, Devin and I had to learn to defend ourselves. I know I could always go to the twins if things got out of hand, but I never want to bother them with stupid crap like that. I used to talk to Luna Mercury, Maxton's mom, and I guess she's technically my sister-in-law. I told her all about how people are horrible to us. But then she told the twins and the twins were angry I didn't come to them. I know they mean well, but it just makes it worse.

"That's great, Alpha. I'm looking forward to seeing him again." I say.

"Did you two discuss anything before he left?" Arthur asks me.

"I'm not sure I know what you mean." I say.

"About who Maxton chose for the beta and gamma positions." Arthur says.

"Oh. No, he didn't tell me anything about that. I just assumed Colin and Kody would be taking them." I say.

"While that's how it typically goes, Elliot and I don't believe it has to be passed down like that. Alpha blood runs through the family, but betas and gammas can be anyone. It's technically just a title. So we told Maxton to choose who he wanted. And he told Elliot who he wanted the day before he left."

"Oh, we'll that's good that he's chosen." I say.

"Kaden. I'm not telling you this for the fun of it. I'm telling you this because Maxton chose you as his beta." Arthur says.

What did he just say? Maxton chose me? To be beta?

"Why would he do that?" I ask, standing up. This is crazy.

"You've proven your loyalty to him countless times. He trusts you to be by his side."

"The pack doesn't like me. They'll never accept me the beta. Maxton has to know that." I say, starting to pace. "This could cause him problems when taking over. No, this can't be right. Who did he choose as gamma?" I ask.

"Devin." Arthur says. My eyes go wide. When Devin finds out, he's going to have a panic attack.

"Are you kidding me?! Does Maxton not realize what he's doing? Choosing the two people this pack hates most to help him run it?! Is he insane?!" I raise my voice. Jack steps forward but Arthur just holds up his hand.

"It's alright Jack. He's allowed to be upset. This is not small news." Arthur says.

"Upset? I'm not upset. I'm pissed that Maxton could be so stupid to do this. The pa k will never accept us. Arthur, you have to talk him out of this. Colin and Kody would be much better suited. They're the children of the current beta and gamma. Devin and I wouldn't be able to hold any power."

"Alpha, if I may," Jack says. Arthur nods and Jack continues. "I know this seems like a lot to take in right now. Trust me, it was a lot for me as well. But I can assure you, my son Colin is definitely not better suited to be beta. He's horrible in combat and the type to run away from danger, not put himself in front to protect the alpha. I wouldn't even trust him to be a warrior. And as for Kody, well, when I told Gamma Ethan his son wouldn't be picked, he was actually relieved. His exact words were 'that boy is dumber than a bag of bricks, he'd never make a good gamma'. What I'm trying to say here is, Maxton made the right call with you and Devin. The pack might not like it at first, but once Maxton takes over the title, his word is law. No one will question it."

I sigh and shake my head. Maxton will only cause himself trouble doing this. Just then, there's a knock at the door. Arthur yells for the person to come in. I turn around to see Devin walking into the room.

"You called for me, Alpha?" Devin says timidly. He looks at me, the look of surprise on his face. "Yes, come sit down with Kaden." Arthur says. Devin walks over with his face down.

"Are we in trouble?" Devin mind-links me with a shaky voice.

"No, but you better prepare yourself." I say back. Devin looks at me, I can tell he's scared. He's so timid. You'd never guess he's a ruthless warrior in his wolf form. When he shifts into his wolf, Tyson, he's completely different. Tyson is very strong and never vaulters in battle. But Devin is as shy as a lamb. It's like night and day. My wolf is strong as well, being of alpha blood, but he's smarter than anything. He can outwit his opponent in almost any situation. I guess that's why his name is Galahad. I thought the name was odd at first, but it grew on me as I got to know my wolf more.

"Devin," Arthur says when Devin is seated next to me, "I called you here to discuss an

important matter with you."

Arthur tells Devin exactly what he told me, and just like I knew he would, Devin freaks out. Like, head between his knees, so pale he looks like he's going to pass out.

"Alpha, you can't let Maxton throw away his chances at a smooth Alpha rein. We would only mess things up." Devin says.

"I already told them all this. They won't budge. Besides, it was Maxton's choice and he made up his mind two years ago. And you know how Max is when he gets an idea in his head, no matter how stupid." I roll my eyes, but quickly compose myself when I see Arthur glaring at me. I mutter sorry and look down.

"This is big news, boys. Maxton has decided and that's that. You can talk to him once he is home tomorrow. You are both dismissed." Arthur says, and turns to his computer. Jack walks us over to the door and closes it once we are out. I look at Devin. He's looking down at the

ground.

"Crap." Devin mutters to himself. I sigh. That's exactly what I was thinking.
