The Twin Alphas’ Fated Mate -
Chapter 14
ALPHA KING JOSH'S POV
"It's not her."
Max voiced with terror etched in his voice. The same terror that sneaked into my veins and spread through my bloodstream.
"So she is fine? But I can smell death too." I queried, rushing down the sloppy hill with Adam beside me.
Max lost me when he added, "She is dying, Josh. She is in the clutches of death!"
My wolf's voice sounded emotional and my eyebrows furrowed. To make the situation more confusing, Adam announced "She can't be dead. I can hear a heart beating. However, there is another..." There is another?
Someone else is down there?
"Yes, Josh." Max exclaimed. "The warrior is alright but not her. She is dying."
I snarled wondering how Max's statement didn't sound confusing to him. Before I could make further inquiries, Max barked, "How can you not perceive her natural scent?"
My eye widened just as I caught sight of Nora who seemed to have knocked herself out of consciousness."She must have hit her head hard enough to faint."
Adam muttered, obviously blaming himself for what happened to Nora. I would have loved to tease him and make him feel guiltier if the scent of a dying werewolf didn't hit me hard, almost knocking me off balance.
The scent came to me like a familiar rosy scent however, it smelled like a dying rose, and for some unknown reason, my heart ached as I sauntered to the depth of the hill with eyes as wide as they could ever be. "I will get this one to the healers while you search for the other one."
Adam announced and started climbing the hill with Nora strapped on his back.
The other one...
How in the Northern realm did not the other one get down here? Although I was confused, I could tell that the dying werewolf wasn't a male."I thought I'd made that clear already! Can you hurry? She won't last long in that state."
Max pushed me to hasten my steps, knowing that if my pace were faster I might slip and break some bones too.
However, I hurried to the bottom, ignoring the scenery as I questioned myself, wanting to know why the scent of the dying rose seemed so familiar to me.
Why does death smell familiar?
Max decided to clarify for me but before he could, I found the body in a puddle of slimy mud."It's Rose, Josh. It's her."
Max whimpered within me and I shivered in fear even though the day was becoming hot. It's her.
For a minute, I couldn't take a step toward the body of the woman that I have been craving. I was stunned. I was breathless and my fists balled. "It's Rose."
I muttered with a thick lump in my throat.
The dress she was wearing was torn and covered in mud. One side of her face was in the slimy puddle while the other was exposed to the harshness of the weather.
I could see the bruises on her face... all over the torn part of her dress. It was obvious that she has been abused and dumped.Slowly, I closed the gap between us as I wondered how long she had been dumped on the borders of my territory. I wondered how long she had been holding on to life as I could clearly see that her bloody cuts weren't fresh.
"Do something, Josh! She is dying!"
Max yelled at me right after he was able to snap out of the daze we had both been trapped in due to Rose's condition.
I blinked rapidly and quickly crouched to lift Rose out of the puddle. Her body fell apart in my arms and I realized that some of her bones have been broken or dislocated.I growled and held her close to my chest as I raced up the sloppy hill despite the risk of falling to my death with the dying Rose in my arms.
"Why does it feel like I am dying with her, Max? What the f**k Is going on?"
I whimpered to my wolf but he didn't seem to have an accurate answer.
But he murmured, "For now, let's hope she survives this. We can find out more later."
I was so scared and the last time I felt this way must be when my father gave up the ghost suddenly. And the other time was when my mom died.Death was scary but the two times that I had witnessed my loved one's death, a huge hole was created in the center of my world.
And if I wasn't careful, Rose might expand that hole.
Was she my loved one?
"Arghh!"
I groaned in pain when I felt my feet slip. The sole of my feet burned as I struggled to keep my balance.
"Focus. This isn't the time to fall."
Rather than show concern for my feet which had suffered despite my leather footwear, Max reprimanded me. I couldn't feel sorry for myself as I used my pain to push myself harder, hoping to leave the hills soon.
And I did it.I reached the top and tapped into my full Alpha strength as I sprinted to the healers to get help for Rose.
"My King...."
Adam breathed as I caught up with him and raced past him toward the healing house of the Healers. I was that fast. Within a few minutes, I slipped through the door of the healing house and placed Rose's beaten body on the first empty bed I could find. "Somebody! Anybody!"
I called out, getting the attention of the Healers just as Adam entered the healing house too.
One of the healers ushered Adam to a bed while Tamira, the daughter of my personal healer walked toward me."I will take care of her, My King." Tamira mumbled calmly but I wasn't convinced.I asked, "Where is Healer Judy?"Tamira curtsied and responded, "My mother can't attend to anyone but you and your family, My King. I will heal her before-"
"What if I give the order for her to do that? I need a capable Healer to treat Ro- her."
I was trying to control my emotions but for reasons I couldn't figure out, my emotions were spiraling out of control.Thankfully a familiar helpful voice rang from the edge of the healing room. "My King, I assure you that my daughter is more than capable of treating and healing the patient and it will do us all good if you can let her begin the healing process immediately."
Judy's words were reassuring as she stepped into the space.
"Come with me, My King. I believe I should check on your health too. I saw you bring the patient in your arms. Let's keep your allergies at bay-"
I retorted calmly as Judy ushered me away from Rose and her daughter, Tamira "There will be no need for that, Healer Judy. I am in good health."
Adam gave me a suspicious look while my Healer seemed unconvinced. If only they both knew how much touching I had done with Rose.We did more than "touching" in fact.
Suddenly, Judy gasped and her middle-aged features became more noticeable. "Could she be your destined mate, My King! Have you finally gotten a cure?"
Although I was worried about Rose's Condition, I chuckled, taking more steps away from Tamira and Rose. "You have got it all wrong, Healer Judy."
She argued, "If she isn't your mate, then why can't I see..."
Adam cut in with a smug, "She belongs to another and he is the Alpha Of-"
"Shut your mouth, Adam!"
I snarled, hissing at my Beta. I hated that he had to point out the fact that Rose wasn't mine. I didn't like that one bit.
I glared at Adam for minutes but Judy chimed, "I am trying to understand how you aren't reacting allergically."
Rather than get the memo, Adam answered, "Perhaps the King has been cured. There was a woman that touched the King the last time he was attacked and-"
"Must you say that now?"
I barked at Adams m even though Judy knew a lot about me. She had been my Healer since I could remember. Judy was assigned by my father just like he did with my other brothers.
So basically, I have known Judy all my life and Tamira had been around since she was born. I knew when she was born and I didn't expect that she would grow to become a fine healer... I didn't expect that she would grow so fast.
"It's alright, My King. I also want you to get cured and if Beta Adam is right, it's good. I will examine you and hope for the best... Hope that the best has happened already."
Judy etched. We all knew that my allergies and relationship with women have been challenging all my life. Sooner or later, the realm would expect me to have a mate and an heir. How would that happen if I remained allergic to women- Max interjected, "But you aren't allergic to Rose and I believe she was bashed by her make because she failed to get your signature on the proposed project."
Well, that made sense.
How dare Richard treat a woman like he did with Rose just because he didn't get what he wanted!I knew what he wanted and I wasn't about to let him have control over the mineral area in the far east of the Northern territory. He was able to get an audience and a chance because I wanted to have more private time with Rose."Are you alright, My King?"
Healer Judy questioned, calling me out of my agitated mind.
"I just need to rip that bastard's head off!" I seethed.
"Who?" Adam asked with a frown. He knew no one gets under my skin except my brothers however Alpha Richard has somehow gotten under my skin.
And he was going to pay heavily.
Before I could give Adam a response, Tamira walked up to us, muttering, "I have performed the healing cycle, Mothe, and My King-"
"Is she awake?" I questioned rather than give Tamira the chance to speak.
Tamira replied, avoiding eye contact with me. "No, My King. She hasn't regained consciousness yet but she will in some hours."
I nodded while Adam walked away to check on Nora."She has to stay in the healing house for-"
"No. I am taking her with me." I voiced, contrasting Tamira's statement.
"But, Alpha King Josh-"
I countered again, "Didn't you say you have completely healed her? Why does she have to stay if you are confident that you have done all there is to do?"
Tamira stuttered for a while but I walked past her before she could speak coherently.
"She goes home with me, Tamira."
I uttered as I walked to Rose and lifted her in my arms for the second time in an hour. This time, her body didn't fall apart. Instead, she coiled into me and snuggled, murmuring softly as she slept. Gazing at her face, I smiled and hardly failed to keep myself from moaning as I felt the sensational twitch of my penis.
No doubt, I was taking her to my home, hoping she would agree to stay when she regains consciousness.
