ALPHA CHARLES POV

Andrew and Matt are wandering around looking for their mates with no luck, but if I had to guess by the expressions on their faces, they’re not too upset about not finding them as they sit at the table with their friends. Damon is supposed to be walking out those doors any second, and I pray to the Goddess he doesn’t go straight to Elle and instead sits his a*s down, not calling more attention to them than necessary.

“Lastly, the reason we are all here to celebrate tonight, Alpha Damon Ledger,” comes Harry’s voice over the loudspeaker, as the big oak doors swing open, revealing Damon in a suit that matches Elle’s dress, with the same flowers inside his breast pocket. As soon as I saw his face and how he zeroed in on her, I knew that he wouldn’t sit down quickly. Taking the room in long, confident strides, Damon was at her side within a millisecond, leaning down and whispering in her ear before pulling her away from the table to the middle of the dance floor with a Taylor Swift song blaring out of the speakers.

s**t. s**t. s**t. f**k!

This is the last thing we need. This is NOT how things are supposed to go; it was not in Cynthia’s plan. The room cascades into angry whispers as Damon and Elle dance around the floor, confirming the rumors of Elle being a born Luna. Or that Damon is planning on taking her as his chosen before she has the “chance” to find her true mate. Either way, it’s not f*****g good and complicates things more than needed.

I glance at Liv and see a smile on her face as she watches the kids twirl around the dancefloor, utterly oblivious to the world around them as they murmur amongst themselves. Watching them, I cannot help but smile too. As they spin, I cannot help but think of how they were as young kids before the spells were placed on them that turned Damon into a little a*****e.

‘I always regretted putting those spells on them,’ Liv says, through our bond, as she dabs her eyes, preventing the tears from running down her eyes. ‘Especially when Damon acted like a little d**k, but now I am glad we did it. They have the normal experiences other kids their age get to have. The kind we got to have before our bond snapped into place.’ She throws me her most dazzling smile, leaving me utterly breathless after all these years.

‘I know what you mean,’ I sigh as I watch them, ‘aren’t you worried that by them dancing like this, they’re messing up Cynthia’s precious plan?’

‘Honestly,’ she sighs, ‘after I saw the ring on Elle’s finger, my gut told me the rest of the plan would go to s**t, and so far, it has.’

‘Damon is staking a public claim on Elle,’ I remind her, ‘The other Alpha in the room are taking that as confirmation of what she is…Why else would an Alpha make such a public claim on a woman who is not his mate? No, the only reason an Alpha would do that is for power.’

‘So, Damon has the right to claim what is his,’ she retorts, her voice edged in annoyance with her focus trained on the dance floor, not removing her attention from the couple spinning around effortlessly.

‘Yes,’ I remind her, ‘but there is a right and a wrong way to do it, and this is not the right way to make these proclamations to the entire werewolf community.’ The music is finally starting to fade as the song ends, but the couple is still in the middle of the floor with their foreheads pressed together as they stare at each other with wonder before pulling apart to walk off and back towards their table.

As they reach the edge, they’re greeted by three angry and slightly annoyed chair members. I cannot hear what they are saying. The other conversations in the room make it hard to concentrate on their voices, but it doesn’t last long as Damon skirts around them, sitting at the table next to ours with Elle at his side.

With a signal to the head server, trolleys of food come out of the kitchen doors, weaving through the tables as they place the first course down among the guests. Tables remain quiet as guests eat, having secretive conversations through the mindlink while throwing not-so-subtle glances at Elle, trying to sense her Alpha energy, which becomes increasingly more difficult when sat next to Damon.

****************************

An hour later, the dinner officially ended. Before the servers even have a chance to collect the dinnerware, Damon and I are bombarded by nosey Alphas, Luna, and Council Members trying to get the inside scoop on Elle.

“Chairmen Abbott, Castello, and Chairmen Doose, how may we help you gentlemen today?” I ask the men crowding around my chair and invading the personal space of my Luna and me.

“We want to know what you and your son are playing at?” Abbott demands as he steps closer to me in an aggressive manner trying to intimidate me. Poseidon starts to bristle in defiance at his proximity and attempts to bully us into submission.

“I don’t know what you mean,” I say, feigning innocence, as I try to scoot my chair away from them to create some much-needed distance between us.

“Come off the bullshit, Charles,” Abbott sneers, trying to insult me by leaving out the “Alpha” title in a show of disrespect to my wolf and me, who is snapping and snarling, wanting to break out to teach this fat f**k an important lesson. “Is Elle a born Luna or not?”

“Oh, gentlemen,” I say, my voice dripping condescension as I look them over, as a chuckle passes over my lips, “I have no idea who would give such a preposterous idea any merit. Maybe you shouldn’t put some much stock in rumors.”

‘So, Damon has the right to claim what is his,’ she retorts, her voice edged in annoyance with her focus trained on the dance floor, not removing her attention from the couple spinning around effortlessly.

“I wouldn’t say they are rumors,” Chairmen Castello chimes in, “her energy is too powerful to be an Omega like you claimed.” I should have known that Chairmen Castello would decipher her energy.

“If Elle were a born Luna, don’t you think we would have included her in the Mate Find?” Olivia asks, her tone getting persnickety from answering the Council Members’ countless questions.

“Unless you’re trying to keep her hidden away so that she may never find her true mate,” Chairman Doose speaks for the first time since approaching our table. “That way, Damon can proclaim her as his chosen mate the second she turns eighteen as a ploy to strengthen your pack.”

“If we were trying to keep her hidden away,” Olivia says, her frustration clear as she stands from her chair, leaning towards the men who have invaded our space and time together, “we wouldn’t have f*****g paraded her around this damn party.” She snaps at them, not caring who these men are or that they could make our life extremely difficult in the coming months.

Continuing her diatribe towards the guests, “Damon has not committed a single crime. He hasn’t marked an underage woman; his only wrongdoing is bucking a mate find tradition. He has not broken the law to justify this harassment from Council members.”

Before they can argue, she turns to me, taking my hand in hers, she pulls me away from my chair and shoves our way past the council members leading us to the dancefloor where we can join the kids as they dance happily to the music, ignoring the other visiting guests.

ALPHA JONAH POV

The phone in my pocket buzzes as I lean against the tree in the middle of New Moon’s pack forest. My scent is hidden using a masking spray. Without looking at the caller ID, I answer the phone, knowing who is calling.

“Are you already in position?” Tiberius asks through the phone. Even though he has asked this question numerous times, I know he is anxious to make sure things go according to plan so that he can finally have his precious Elle in his hands.

“For the tenth time,’ I grumble, annoyed by his constant questioning and calling, “I am exactly where I need to be. Can you stop f*****g calling every five seconds? You’re going to blow my cover otherwise. Be patient, and I will meet you at the designated area for the swap.” I say, slamming the phone closed while I stare at the decorated greenhouse underneath the stars, wondering when Damon and Elle will cross the field so I can make my move and finally be done with this whole thing.
