Elle’s POV

I cannot get that k**s out of my head. It clouds every waking thought making my body buzz with excitement I didn’t think possible. It has been forty-eight hours since Damon and I were caught in the library by Matt and probably Andrew. Something has shifted between Damon and me since he’s been back from Alpha training, and I don’t know how much longer I can keep lying about it. Especially after what happened on the field during our sparing session.

Damon and I were so in sync it was like dancing, but only we knew the moves. I had never felt my wolf as clearly as I did then. I could feel her trying to break free; it was like Damon’s Alpha power was feeding into her, fueling us. I felt stronger, faster, and more aware of my surroundings than ever before. It was euphoric, and from Damon’s expression, he felt the same. I could feel the stares of those around us, stopping in their training to watch us, whispering comments about how we moved together.

“Miss Davidson?” comes the sweet yet stern voice of Mrs. Baisden, startling me back to reality and reminding me that I am in sixth-period English, paying attention to whatever is being discussed. This isn’t like me to be distracted by some guy—especially a guy who could never be my mate.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Baisden. Can you repeat the question?” I say, my cheeks warming from embarrassment as my classmates snicker silently but make no comments. Since the tournament and the sparing session with the Alpha’s son, no one has dared to make an outright degrading comment toward me. Even Melanie is keeping her distance since being publically dumped in the courtyard. It was odd, and I thought she would torment me till the end of her days, but she hasn’t looked in my direction since the tournament.

“Please pay attention, Miss Davidson,” Mrs. Baisden scolds me and is about to repeat herself when a knock on the door distracts her train of thought. Andrew opens it to reveal three Alphas in the doorway. Two have smug expressions, and the third Alpha is pissed, his aura shining with anger. “Good Afternoon, Alphas. How may I help you?” Mrs. B says in a sickly sweet voice, and I practically gag at the obvious a*s-kissing. Many lower-ranking wolves can’t help it; it’s a commonality among us. Thank the goddess that trait skipped me. I don’t think I could tolerate myself if I kissed the ground they walked on. Maybe living with an Alpha family for a few years has helped me endure their aura or something.

“I’m sorry for disrupting your lesson Julie,” Alpha Charles says as he steps over the threshold leaving the other two in the hall like waiting pups. “I was wondering if I could pull Elle away for the remainder of your class?”

“Of course, Alpha!” Mrs. Baisden smiles brightly. I knew as soon as he asked, she would say yes. She cannot say no to her him; it might land her in serious trouble within the pack, and no wolf wants that. Looking at me, “Elle, please grab your things and go with Alpha Charles and Alpha Damon,” I quickly gather my things, confused as to why Alpha Charles includes me in his Alpha discussions, especially with one I don’t know.

Joining the men in the hallway, we silently make our way outside, causing anxiety to rise. What’s going on? Why am I being pulled out of class, and who is this strange Alpha on our territory? My heartbeat quickens as my body prepares its fight-or-flight responses.

‘Breathe,’ Damon’s voice rings through my mind, and the tension in my gut slowly releases as I take his advice. I can feel the warmth of his arm as we walk down the hallway behind his father and the mystery Alpha. The hair on my arms on end from the electricity between us. As if he can feel me wanting to put some distance between us, Damon grabs my hand, and the world crashes around me. Is this how humans feel when they get high? Within seconds the feeling is gone as he releases my hand, taking a step away so that his father doesn’t see.

‘What’s going on?’ I ask Damon through the link, secretly enjoying having him in my head. Our secret conversations that everyone else isn’t privy to. No one overhears what we might say to each other.

‘Alpha jackass is here on some bullshit excuse to meet you,’ Damon replies, looking at me with an eye roll. I knew he was referring to Charles and Olivia’s sudden interest in my love life. Since school started, they have been not so subtle about throwing different men in my direction. I would have welcomed their constant interference a few weeks ago, but now it’s becoming overbearing.

‘Why do they keep throwing these men at me?’ I ask Damon, who says nothing and gives me a guilty look like he knows the answers but can’t or doesn’t want to tell me. ‘Damon, what aren’t you telling me?’ I ask again, this time in a more demanding tone hoping he caves and tells me whatever it is he knows.

‘I’m sorry, Biscuit, I can’t,’ he says. I am about to retort when I run into a brick wall that should not be there, stumbling backward and nearly falling on my a*s. Thankfully, Damon was there to catch me. The unknown Alpha suddenly stopped his nose, sniffing around like a crazed animal looking for an unknown scent. That’s when I see her come around the corner, Melanie, nose in the air, looking just as crazed as the behemoth of a man standing beside me.

It finally registers why he stopped suddenly; this Alpha found his mate. The air between them becomes electrified when they lay eyes on each other, saying the one phrase every wolf wants to say as soon as they turn eighteen.

“Mate.”

Without hesitation, they run into each other’s arms, groping at each other like Melanie is in heat or something; that won’t happen till after they mark each other. Which might happen right now with the way they are going at it. Charles is cheering and clapping, clearly excited at another mate bond being formed; Alpha Charles and Luna Olivia hold the mate bond in the highest regard, so why are they constantly throwing men on me like I am supposed to choose one?

“Well, this is wonderful! We must celebrate the packhouse tonight to celebrate Alpha Stephan and his new Luna! Oh, your parents will be so excited for you, dear!” Alpha Charles says, wrapping Melanie into a big bear hug causing Alpha Stephan to growl possessively, pulling her closer. Charles doesn’t take any offense; he gives a hearty chuckle.

“I remember when I first found my Luna,” Charles says, looking off as he recalls the distant memory, “I wanted to gouge out the eyes of every unmated wolf in the territory until my mark was on her neck.”

“Congratulations, Alpha Stephen and Luna Melanie,” Damon says, a genuine smile on his face as he reaches out a hand to shake Alpha Stephens’s hand and nods to Melanie. Who isn’t paying attention to one word Damon says as she clings to Stephan’s arm, looking at him like the most magnificent man she has ever seen. I wonder if it is hard for Damon to witness Melanie happy with her new mate because they dated for so long. But as I study his face expecting to find some deeply hidden pain, all I see is a relief.

“Congratulations, Luna Melanie,” I say, smiling at her, but I am completely shocked when she launches into my arms, giving me a giant squeeze. I am so taken aback that I don’t respond, my arms hanging limply at my side.

“Alright,” Damon says, gently pulling me free from Melanie’s grip, the tingles from his contact slowly radiating throughout my body.

“We should probably let you and Alpha Stephen get to know one another, and we will see both tonight.”

“Thank you, Alpha Charles and Alpha Damon,” Alpha Stephen says, talking for the first time since I joined them in the hallway.

“Come, dear,” he says, looking at Melanie like she is the first woman he has ever seen. Melanie waves at us but isn’t paying attention; her focus is consumed by the man holding her arm.

Alpha Charles was about to say something to us when he turned around, stopping to stare at Damon’s hand still resting on my arm. As soon as his eyes land on us, we step away from each other, pulling apart like shrapnel. Alpha Charles clears his throat, his eyes black, as Poseidon glares at Damon.

“Elle,” comes the deeper and throatier voice of Charles wolf, his black eyes never leaving Damon, whose eyes kept shifting between his standard blue and Slade’s black. “Leave NOW!” Alpha Charles commanded, clearly pissed in a way I had never seen him before. Charles was usually the more levelheaded of the two, but something about seeing Damon’s hand on my arm caused him to freak.

Needing no extra encouragement, I run out of the school as fast as possible. The sounds of two pissed-off Alphas echo around me as the two growls at one another but demand submission from the other. The memory of their snarls follows me the entire way home and to my room

Not saying a word to a single person, I run straight to my room, locking the door behind me. What the hell was that? Charles and Olivia have been throwing potential mates at me left, right, and sideways. Why would Damon’s hand on my arm send Poseidon into such a rage that he would fight with Damon in the middle of the high school foyer?

Toppled with their constant concern over my dating life, trying to find me a mate when I am not even eighteen. Many of the things I have been told about myself, my past, and my abilities do not add up. It doesn’t make sense; they honor and respect the mate bond above all other gifts given to our kind. So why are they trying to get me to find my mate when they know I can’t yet?

Who knew junior year would have me questioning everything I know about myself and the place I have called home for the last five years? I don’t know, but I better find those answers fast. I sigh as I fling myself onto my large, king-sized bed, wanting to hide under the covers forever.
