The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 99
These days, Evelyn wasn't holding her breath for anything from Charles. Dahlia, riding high on Charles' favoritism, had the nerve to throw baseless accusations at Evelyn, which landed her in the basement, facing all kinds of torment. Evelyn wouldn't let anything slide, not Charles' betrayal and certainly not Dahlia's plotting. Even if getting back at Charles had to wait, Evelyn wasn't about to let last night's ordeal go unpaid.
"Evelyn, you wouldn't dare! Charles would never let you get away with this!" Dahlia blurted out, trying to use Charles as her shield.
"Is that so?" Evelyn smirked, unfazed. She was curious to see just how Charles could hold something over her now. "Toss her in," Evelyn ordered, her voice as cold as ice.
No sooner had she spoken than the bodyguard, showing no mercy, threw Dahlia into the basement.
Dahlia hit the ground with a thud. "Ow!" she yelped, her face twisting in pain. She shot daggers at Evelyn, standing by the door. Never did she imagine Evelyn would actually lock her up. But that was it, wasn't it?
Dahlia quickly regained her composure, flashing Evelyn a scornful look. All that bravado, and for what? For getting locked in a basement? That was so ridiculous. Dahlia wasn't afraid of a basement, and she knew it was only a matter of time before Sandy would alert Charles. He'd come rushing to her aid soon enough. Then, she'd make Evelyn regret it.
"What's on your mind, Dahlia?" Evelyn asked, her eyes meeting Dahlia's with an even sharper edge, her lips curling into a sly grin. "I heard... you've got a real fear of... snakes."
The mention of snakes dropped Dahlia's smug expression instantly. Panic flickered in her eyes. Snakes were her deepest fear. Ever since that bite when she was a kid, just hearing about snakes made her skin craw. She tried to mask her fear, foreing a steady tone. "Evelyn, do you really think I'm like you? Do you think I'm afraid of such silly things?"
"Really?" Evelyn's smile widened, dripping with sarcasm. She signaled to the bodyguard, who promptly brought over a cage covered with a black cloth and set it down at the door The hissing from inside was unmistakable.
Dahlia's face went ashen, her bravado crumbling as fear flooded her eyes. She instinctively backed away, shouting desperately, "Evelyn, you wouldn't dare! Charles will never forgive you!" Even now, she clung to her threats. Charles was her last bargaining chip.
"Hah, why would I fear him if I'm already going to do it?" Evelyn retorted with a cold laugh. She stepped closer, pulling off the black cloth in front of Dahlia's eyes. Evelyn stared at the snakes inside the cage, the creatures she had feared until just a day ago. But after last night, they no longer held power over her. Instead, they were Dahlia's terror.
Evelyn's sudden reveal caught Dahlia off guard. Her eyes were locked on the writhing snakes, hissing with menace. The sight was too much; Dahlia's face contorted with terror as she let out a piercing scream. "Ah!" Evelyn watched her, calm and collected. "I thought you weren't afraid?"
"Evelyn, let's be reasonable. Let me out, and we can work this out. I swear, I won't breathe a word to Charles," Dahlia pleaded, her bravado shattered. How could she not be afraid?
