The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 72
The trio walked into the company together and were greeted by Taylor's assistant, Amanda. Her eyes scanned their name badges, finally landing on Evelyn. She gave her a once-over with an unreadable expression and said, "So, you're Evelyn. The one Ms. Taylor is fond of."
"I'm thankful for her appreciation. I'll do my best not to disappoint her," Evelyn responded humbly.
Amanda's expression remained unchanged. She was a bit chilly as she remarked, "Let's see if you can make it through the probation period before you start making promises."
Dahlia chimed in with a friendly tone, "Hey Amanda, I know you're a coffee aficionado. Charles asked me to bring you some special brew to try. If you like it, I'll bring more next time." She pulled out a beautifully packaged box of coffee from her bag and handed it to Amanda. Amanda didn't react to Charles' name immediately, but her eyes lit up at the sight of the brand on the coffee box. As a coffee lover, she recognized the Jenkins family special blend-something you couldn't easily buy. She'd been wanting to try it for ages.
There were whispers around the office about Dahlia having some vague connection with the Jenkins family. Amanda thought it was just gossip, but now it seemed there was some truth to it. Her demeanor towards Dahlia warmed considerably, and her tone softened. "Please thank Mr. Jenkins for me."
"Sure thing," Dahlia replied with a smile.
After tucking the coffee away, Amanda introduced the three to the rest of the department. She highlighted Dahlia's accomplishments. "Meet Dahlia, the first-place winner of the recent jewelry design contest. Let's give her a warm welcome." Amanda started the applause, and the others joined in.
Then, she casually introduced the others. "And this is Evelyn and Grace."
"Hi, everyone. I'm Evelyn," Evelyn greeted sincerely, her eyes full of earnestness.
"Welcome! I've seen your work and am a big fan," said one colleague. Thanks to Taylor, she had seen the top contest entries.
"Same here. I think you have a bright future," another added.
"Thank you," Evelyn replied, grateful for the warm reception.
As the attention shifted towards
Evelyn, Dahlia discreetly sent a text. Not long after, the receptionist brought several delivery guys to the door, carrying coffee and desserts from a famous brand.
"Is Miss Dahlia here? Your coffee and dessert order has arrived."
Dahlia looked genuinely surprised. "I didn't order anything."
"It was Mr. Jenkins who placed the order for you."
Dahlia's face turned beet red at the mention of Mr. Jenkins, and she hurried over to sign for the delivery.
Amanda promptly rallied Evelyn and Grace. "Come on, lend a hand with these."
"Wow, these desserts are so pricey. I usually can't justify buying them," Grace whispered as she helped carry the treats to the break room.
"If you like them, help yourself to more later," Dahlia said with a sweet smile, blushing as she invited everyone, "It's Mr. Jenkins' treat for you all."
"Thank you, Mr. Jenkins, and thank
you, Dahlia," the group echoed, understanding the gesture. It was clear this was more about showing support for Dahlia than anything elsedt was a move to ensure she felt welcome and looked after.
A favor from Mr. Jenkins wasn't something anyone would forget easily.
Evelyn's eyes flashed with a brief coldness. Charles was certainly pulling out all the stops to make sure Dahlia didn't face any hurdles at work.
