The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 35
Evelyn lifted her leg and kicked Charles hard on the shin.
Charles was caught off guard. The pain made him gasp, involuntarily stepping back.
Evelyn pushed him hard, sending Charles tumbling onto the toilet seat. Seizing the moment, she pulled open the bathroom door and quickly left.
Charles emerged from the stall shortly after. Standing at the door, his gaze on Evelyn's retreating figure was like that of a hunter eyeing his prey, wishing he could devour her then and there.
Not far away, Dahlia stood hidden behind some greenery. Her hands were clenched tightly.
Whether it was five years ago or five years from now, everyone knew Charles loved Dahlia because he showered her with endless favoritism.
However, he had never looked at Dahlia with such intensity.
...
When Evelyn returned, dinner had already been served for a while. Brooks hadn't started eating and was waiting for her.
"Mr. Brooks, I'm sorry," Evelyn apologized.
"It's okay." Brooks' gaze lingered on Evelyn's swollen lips for a second before he looked away.
Evelyn, trying to hide her embarrassment, lowered her head as she ate, her ears turning red. She had fixed her clothes on the way back, but the swollen lips, clearly kissed by Charles, were unmistakable to the discerning eye. By the time dinner was finished, it was almost 10 PM.
Brooks was paying the bill when he said to Evelyn, "Let me give you a ride."
"Thank you, Mr. Brooks."
Evelyn didn't refuse and waited aside for him. Suddenly, a forceful grip seized Evelyn's wrist, pulling her away from Brooks and into a familiar chest.
Charles gripped Evelyn's waist tightly, pressing her against him as he coldly addressed Brooks, "She's my woman. I'll take care of her myself. Mr. Brooks, you need not trouble yourself."
After saying this, Charles forcibly led Evelyn outside.
Brooks instinctively raised his hand to intervene but silently let it fall back to his side. He knew of Evelyn and Charles' relationship.
Back in the day, Evelyn's love for Charles was public knowledge.
Evelyn's expression turned cold when they walked a few steps away from Brooks. She tried to pry Charles' hand off, hissing. "Charles, I'm not your woman. Let go!"
Charles' expression darkened, his grip tightening evidently.
Evelyn winced in pain, her grip turning fiercer, but Charles' hand was like a vice, firmly imprisoning her against him. No matter how much she pinched or pulled, he wouldn't let go, forcefully dragging her outside. Evelyn couldn't help but sneer, "Charles, as the head of the Jenkins family, aren't you ashamed to be clinging to an ex in public?"
Dahlia emerged from the restroom and found Charles gone, so she immediately followed. She saw Charles holding Evelyn and stepped forward. "Charles..."
Charles ignored her completely. Just as he was about to drag Evelyn away, Dahlia thought of the scene she witnessed outside the restroom, and felt a surge of hatred and anger.
She swayed, appearing to falter. "Charles..."
Charles paused, his gaze shifting to Dahlia. He noticed her pale complexion and her collapsing figure, quickly let go of Evelyn's hand, and caught Dahlia before she hit the ground. "Dahlia..."
The moment she was caught, Dahlia fainted and slumped into his arms. Charles immediately lifted her in his arms and briskly walked away.
When he had let go of Evelyn, who had been struggling violentl, she was thrown off balance and crashed into a vase. The vase shattered upon hitting the ground.
Evelyn's hand landed on the fragments.
"Ah!" The pain made Evelyn cry out.
"Ms. Evelyn..."
Everything happened so fast. Brooks wanted to help but couldn't do it in time. He watched as Evelyn fell amidst the vase fragments.
When he rushed to Evelyn's side, her face was pale with fear. She stared at her blood-covered hand, her voice trembling as she said, "My hand..."
"Don't worry, it'll be okay. I'll take you to the hospital." Brooks moved to help her up.
Evelyn's legs were weak. She feared her hand would be ruined. She had promised Charlie she would become a great designer. Her hand couldn't be ruined. "Ms. Evelyn, I apologize for the intrusion."
Evelyn couldn't walk, so Brooks lifted her in his arms and quickly headed to his car.
...
The doctor carefully examined
Evelyn and then said, "Don't worry, the nerves are not damaged. You can be at ease. Stay overnight for observation, and you will be discharged in the morning.
Evelyn, who had been tense, finally relaxed.
Brooks helped with the hospital admission procedures, and she thanked him.
"Rest well." Brooks instructed before dimming the ward's lights and leaving.
The ward door closed.
The night deepened.
Ever since Charlie left, Evelyn's sleep quality had worsened. She was
relying on medication. Without taking her medication that night, her sleep was restless, plagued by nightmares.
In the middle of the night, she vaguely felt someone at her bedside. A very familiar presence was
watching her for a long time. Homet:
thoughts were too blurry to distinguish between reality and a dream.
The next morning, with one hand bandaged, Evelyn went to complete the discharge procedures on her own.
"Evelyn!" Dahlia called out to her, reaching for her injured hand.
Evelyn dodged, ignoring her, and continued forward.
Dahlia blocked her path again. "Evelyn, do you think playing both sides is that fun? You said you broke up with Charles. What are you doing now?"
"I advise you not to waste your effort. Charles only has room for me in his heart. No matter how many tricks you play, he won't fall for you!
"To him, you're nothing but a tool for relief."
"Slap!"
Evelyn raised her hand and delivered a slap to Dahlia's face.
