The Day Our Promise Breaks -
Chapter 101
Getting out of here wasn't as easy as Dahlia had thought.
"Charles..." Dahlia's voice was filled with pitiful sobs. With a loud clang, the door slammed shut.
At that moment, Evelyn looked up, meeting Charles' blazing fury without a hint of fear. Instead, she let out a cold laugh, challenging him. "And why on earth shouldn't I?"
"Ms. Evelyn, Mr. Jenkins just managed to clear your name from those murder charges last night. You really shouldn't be..." Sensing the tension between them, Aiden stepped in and spoke softly. His words hinted at Charles' efforts the previous night. Charles kept her locked to protect her.
"So, I should be grateful, huh?" Evelyn's voice dripped with sarcasm as memories of the previous night's ordeal in the basement flooded back. None of this was her doing. She was innocent. Why would she need his protection?
If Charles had shown even a shred of fairness and a bit of trust instead of jumping to conclusions, Evelyn wouldn't have been dragged to the police station. Nor would he have used her deepest fears against her as punishment just to force her to reflect and confess. Aiden wanted to say yes, but Evelyn's tone and expression were anything but thankful towards Mr. Jenkins. He found himself at a loss for words.
Charles was frustrated by Evelyn's lack of gratitude. She always took a mile whenever given an inch. Now that his grandmother was back, Evelyn was even more defiant. As soon as he stepped out, she was stirring up trouble for Dahlia again.
Charles' face turned stormy, his voice as icy as a thousand-year-old glacier. "Open the door!"
This command was directed at the bodyguards, who were loyal to Rosa. Her orders were for them to obey Evelyn. But this was Charles, the head of the Jenkins family. The intensity of his presence made them tremble.
"No!!" Evelyn stood her ground, unfazed by Charles' intimidation. She stepped forward, blocking the door.
"Evelyn, you've become completely
reckless now that grandma's
In
backing you!" The veins on Charles temples bulged with anger. He strode forward, grabbed Evelyn's wrist, yanked her away from the door, and tossed her aside,
Evelyn, still weak, couldn't withstand Charles' force and was flung like a rag doll, crashing into the wall.
"Ms. Evelyn!" The bodyguards were shocked, rushing to shield Evelyn.
Evelyn steadied herself, watching Charles with a grim expression. He kicked at the door, desperate to get his beloved Dahlia out. Evelyn remembered how he had locked her up without mercy for a full day and night, leaving her to suffer. However, for Dahlia, he couldn't wait a
moment longer.
The chill in Evelyn's eyes grew colder. Bracing herself against the wall, she spoke with icy resolve, "Charles, if you take Dahlia out, I'll lock her back up. And it won't just be tit for tat-I'll double it!" "Let's see who are going to lock Dahlia up again while I'm still here!" Charles' gaze swept coldly over the bodyguards behind Evelyn, his voice frigid. He remained unwavering in his defense of Dahlia. "I will!" Rosa's commanding voice rang out from the elevator entrance.
