The Apple of My Eye
Chapter 1446 The Unexpected Visitor

Lily was moved by Nick's words. 'Why didn't I get a chance to meet such a wonderful gentleman in the past?' she wondered.

To be honest, Nick's gesture had really touched her heart. For a woman like Lily who had been leading a nomadic life for so long, all she wanted was to have her own family and lead a steady life. Although Nick looked sincere but his eyes were bereft of any attachment or tenderness towards her. Nevertheless, Lily felt warm.

But the truth was that no matter how much she was touched by Nick's demeanor, she came to this place with a purpose and she had to complete the task.

"Nick, please let me stay here over tonight. I promise you that I'll leave at the daybreak tomorrow." Lily looked at Nick as she requested her eyes full of expectation. She was waiting for him to accept her request.

However, Nick shook his head and replied, "You really can't stay here. It's inappropriate." Nick looked extremely serious and his voice was stern when he uttered the last word. His intent and attitude were clear Lily was disappointed because she didn't expect this kind of sternness from Nick. Clearly, she understood that it would not be so easy to execute her plan. However, she felt less worried on second thought. All she needed to do was spin out time till that woman showed up and let that woman see her stay with Nick. After all, she did not receive instruction to do anything with him, right?

When she thought about that, Lily pretended to nod her head in disappointment. "But Nick, I don't want to stay in the hotel by myself for so long. Can I stay here and talk to you for a while?" she asked. Nick hesitated for a while. However, he felt relieved by the fact that she finally agreed to leave. He finally agreed to let her stay a little longer. What would the harm be if he allowed her to stay for a little longer? So he nodded his head. "Well, you can watch TV in the living room. I have something important to deal with in the study."

Lily immediately replied, "Okay, okay. I won't disturb you. Please go ahead with your business."

After Nick walked into the study, Lily made herself comfortable in the living room and turned the TV on. However, she was growing restless in her mind. It was clear from her face that she was absent-minded. Intermittently, she kept glancing at the door and rover her eyes to check whether Nick had found out about her real intention.

Nick, however, didn't come out since he walked into the study. Lily was getting continually anxious as she watched the time passing second by second. She wondered if at all that woman would even show up. But her employer had told her that the woman would definitely show up. She would heave a sigh every now and then as she waited for the time to execute her plan of action.

Lily sat fidgeting on the couch. The television screen seemed almost blurred to her as she did not pay any attention to it. The wait seemed endless. Lilly was getting impatient and anxious with every passing second. Finally, she got irritated. She stood up and started walking to and fro in the living room. Suddenly, Nick stepped out of the study. Her movement might have disturbed him.

"Are you leaving?" Nick said. "Let me drive you to the hotel." He paced forward to grab the car keys.

"Don't!" Lily's heart almost leaped out of her mouth to see Nick reaching out for the car keys. She stopped him immediately and forced a smile as she said, "To be honest, I was a little worried because I don't know what will I do tomorrow?" She feigned to be worried.

"I have told you that there is no need for you to worry. I will pay the hotel for another week. So you will have one more week to find a solution," Nick said in a cool yet nonchalant voice.

After all he didn't have much money. Though things had started to look up at his company, but still it had a long way to go as far as financial stability was concerned. Besides he still owed a big debt to Sheryl. So all he could do to help Lily was to pay for her hotel for just one more week.

"Money is not what I'm worried about. I just..." Lily stopped. She said in her mind, 'What I'm worrying is what if that woman named Cassie doesn't show up. What if I don't get the reward money?' "So what is it that's bothering you?" Nick frowned impatiently.

Lily racked her brains for an excuse. Right at this moment, the doorbell rang.

"Ding-dong!" went the door bell.

Nick moved his eyes from Lily towards the main entrance door. 'Who would be here at this time of the night?' Nick's brows tightened in a stiff frown.

"Nick, wait! I'm going to answer it!" Before Nick could respond, Lily plunged ahead to the door with full spirit.

She heaved a sigh of relief as she stood in front of the door holding the doorknob. The moment had finally arrived. She couldn't help getting excited.

She brought a wide smile on her face and opened the door without any delay.

As the door opened, Lily's eyes met a graceful woman with a surprised look on her face, much as she expected.

Lily didn't speak a word. She looked at the woman with a polite smile on her delicately made-up face.

Cassie's face turned pale at the very moment she saw Lily.

She had prepared soup and dishes for Nick. She thought it would give her a chance to have a good conversation with him that would eventually help in dispelling all the misunderstandings between them. But the last thing Cassie had expected was to have an unknown woman open the door for her in Nick's department. She was not prepared for this! How dared he!

Cassie's heart started beating against her chest as all uncalled for thought started crowding her mind. The thermos bottle in her hands seemed so heavy that it would weigh her down to being almost breathless. Cassie stared at Lily who looked enchanting in front her, anger flushing in her eyes. The woman wore thick perfume and her meticulously made-up face looked pretty yet fake. She couldn't believe that Nick would fall in love with such a woman! It was unbelievable!

Cassie suddenly remembered the photo that Nick posted on Wechat. That fairy hand must be of this woman.

Ridiculous! Cassie felt disgusted at the very thought of it. However, just to avoid making things more uncomfortable for the three of them, she pulled up her cold lips to force a dry smile.

Why would she subject herself into such a humiliation! She even prepared dishes! She even intended to clear the air between herself and Nick!

She seized the thermos bottle tightly in her hands. She was afraid she might drop it carelessly. She had spent several hours to make those dishes. She wouldn't allow Nick and this woman to take any advantage.

"Lily, who is it?" A familiar voice that Cassie had been longing for pulled her attention towards the inside of the room. Seething in grief and anger, Cassie moved her eyes from the woman standing in front of her and looked inward.

'Lily? So, this woman's name was Lily?' Cassie thought to herself. How sweetly he called her name! Cassie bit her lips with all her might, trying to stop herself from falling apart. However, the desperate look in her eyes did not fail to reveal the condition of her heart.

Nick waited for a while and when he didn't get any answer from Lily and hadn't even seen anyone coming in, he decided to check by himself. When he was approaching the door, he halted at the very sight of Cassie. His brows knitted in a tight frown and doubts on his face.

'Cassie? What is she doing here?' Nick thought perplexed at this surprise visit.

The next moment, as he lifted his foot to approach the door, Cassie cast a glance at him coldly before she turned around to walk away.

"Wait!" Nick shouted instinctively as he marked the look on Cassie's face, the sorrow in her eyes that revealed her wounded heart.

But Cassie literally turned deaf ears to him. She turned around holding the thermos tighter, somehow managed to pull her act together and walked to another direction.

Nick immediately hastened to chase after her. But as soon as he reached the door, Lily suddenly stopped him with her body and threw herself to him.

"Oh, no! I feel so dizzy, so dizzy..." Lily cried out, her voice dripping from a loud cry to a faint mumble as she fainted and fell into Nick's arms, unconsciously.

Nick suddenly found himself caught in this unprecedented accident not knowing which way to go. The moment he tried to push Lily back, he realized that her body lay in his arm, limp, with her eyes closed. What... What had happened all of a sudden? It left Nick in an exasperated state and he cried out, "Lily, wake up! Wake up!" Nick looked to the door with anxious eyes. Cassie had disappeared. He started to call Lily's name lightly.

But Lily lay still. She had lost her consciousness.
