Raven’s POV

The walk back to recovery seems endless. I try to memorize the turns that we take so I can find my way back out. First, we take a left and then another left and then a right. After a while, I lose track of the turns that we have taken. I don’t understand why every hospital has to be a maze.

Finally, we come to a set of double doors that are labeled recovery. The orderly stops in his tracks before using his badge to open the door. He shuffles awkwardly on his feet as he looks at me.

“This probably isn’t my place but I have to warn you,” he tells me. “Alpha Leo is in rough shape. It may be hard for you to see him like this.”

“I can handle it,” I say trying to sound confident but even I can hear the nervousness in my voice.

Using his badge to open the door, the orderly gestures for me to follow him inside the recovery area. Steadying my breath as I walk through the doors, I try to remain calm.

“I need to see her!” A loud voice screams through the recovery room. “I need to see Raven.”

I turn and look at the orderly in confusion. “I thought you said Alpha Leo was in rough shape?”

“That doesn’t mean that he hasn’t been screaming for you since he woke up from surgery,” the orderly smiles awkwardly at me. “At first we thought he was delusional when he said that you were his mate.”

“Unfortunately, he is telling the truth,” I g***n as I follow the sounds of my mate demanding to see me.

The orderly pulls back a curtain and I see Leo fighting with a male nurse who is trying to strap him to the bed. I watch the situation in shock. Leo balls his fist at his side before he swings at the nurse and I gasp aloud. The nurse barely dodges the hit. Even in his weakened state, Leo is strong. His skin is beginning to regain its color, it no longer has the grayish hue that it did while I sat next to him on the battlefield. Bruises and deep cuts cover his normally handsome face making him look more rugged.

“Alpha,” the male nurse tries to plead with him. “You are going to tear your stitches if you don’t calm down.”

“I don’t care,” Leo screams. “I need to know that Raven is okay. I need to know that I saved her.”

My heart melts at his words. I didn’t expect him to care so much about me. Walking forward, I place my hand on the nurse’s shoulder and he quietly takes a step back. Taking his place at Leo’s side, I brush my hand across his forehead and a rush of sparks flow between us.

The sparks startle me and I quickly remove my hand from his face. I was told that there is a certain electricity that you feel between yourself and your mate when you find them, but I thought that it was metaphorical. I didn’t realize that I would actually feel sparks between us.

The rush of electricity seems to calm Leo down and he stops thrashing around. His green eyes open wide as he realizes that it is me standing beside him. Seemly out of nowhere, he finds the strength to sit up.

“You are okay,” he whispers as he grabs my hand and holds it to his cheek. The sparks flow between us and a feeling of ease washes over me.

“I am okay,” I say quietly as I try to pull my hand away from his cheek but he refuses to let go. “Thanks to you, but you are badly hurt for trying to protect me all on your own. That wasn’t the brightest thing to do.”

“I had to save you,” Leo says quietly. “Alpha Harry’s warriors weren’t fighting fast enough.”

I bite down hard on my l*p. There is a reason that Harry’s men weren’t fighting fast enough, they weren’t really trying to save me.

“We can talk about this later,” I tell Leo, not wanting to upset him more than he already is. “How are you feeling?”

“Much better now that you are by my side,” Leo says with a weak smile.

Blush rushes across my cheeks at his words and I have to admit that he is a smooth talker, even in his weakened state. “Now is not the time to hit on me,” I joke.

“I think it is the perfect time,” Leo smiles as he tries to reposition himself on the bed. “You can’t be mean to me because I am injured.”

“That’s what you think,” I laugh. “Just because you risked your life for me doesn’t mean that I have to forgive you.”

Leo smiles at me brightly as he holds onto my hand. “I think that is exactly what it means.”

Finally, I pull my hand out of his grasp and Leo pushes his full bottom l*p out in a pout. “As I said, we can talk about this later,” I say as try not to focus on his full lips.

Before I realize what is happening, I am fantasizing about what it would feel like to have his lips pressed against my own. If we kissed would it be soft and sweet or full of desperation and hunger? Shaking the thoughts from my mind, I try to focus back on the situation at hand.

“What are you thinking about, Little Bird?” Leo says huskily and a strange feeling stirs in my core.

Pushing the feeling to the side, I focus back on the fact that Leo is injured. “I am thinking about postponing the rest of my tour until you are feeling better. I don’t want to leave you here alone.”

“Are you starting to care for me, Little Bird?” Leo smirks.

“That is neither here nor there,” I avoid the question because honestly, I don’t know the answer to the question.

“I think it matters,” Leo says as he tries to get out of the bed, but he immediately winces in pain.

Pushing his hands to his side, I lift his hospital gown to finally look at the damage that the rogues caused. I was not at all prepared for what I saw. A huge chunk of flesh is missing from his side. I realize that we are going to be here a lot longer than I expected. Leo isn’t leaving the hospital any time soon.
