Sweet Twins Indulge in Daddy's Love -
Chapter 377 Self Deception
Nancy wished she could tell him what happened. How was she going to explain this to Jay?
"Don't worry, Jay. I'm sure she'll be back soon," she said, drawing a smile.
But although Nancy said that, even she was not sure when Doris would come back. She only stated that to calm the obviously anxious Jay, who had been pacing back and forth while fidgeting.
The latter suddenly stopped on his tracks and turned to face her with a stern expression. "Nancy, I'm sure you know that Doris is pregnant. If something terrible happens to her and the baby, can you imagine the consequences? I know it has nothing to do with you, but how can you feel at ease when your friend is missing? The baby she's carrying is my child, the heir of Fang Group!"
Jay's tone started with worry, and then eventually turned into a warning towards the end.
Nancy, too, was worried.
If something bad really happened to Doris and her baby, she would carry the guilt for the rest of her life!
"Felix Mu took Doris away, and before they left, I sensed that she was not in good condition!" Nancy managed to say after heaving a sigh.
"Where did they go? Tell me!" Evidently angry, Jay firmly grasped both her shoulders as his voice thundered.
"I don't know! I really don't know! I drove back alone, so I don't know where they could possibly have gone to!"
At this point, Nancy didn't dare hide anything from him, knowing that Jay was the only man who could bring her pregnant friend back.
And upon hearing her explanation, the man became too furious to even say something. "You..." He massaged his temple and after drawing a breath, he continued, "Where did you two separate?" Immediately, Nancy told him the place where she last saw Doris.
While the latter's beau scoured in the entire city looking for her, Doris had spent hours with her childhood sweetheart, straightening out things from the past. And after clearing out their misunderstanding, she felt the guilt slowly crawling up to her.
So, Doris tried to speak more gently than before, hoping that it would somehow ease the tension. However, Felix was utterly dumbfounded to hear her speak in such a manner when he remembered her to be an aggressive talker.
But even with that realization, Felix kept it to himself. He was just pleased that everything that had come to light and they were able to make peace with each other. "Let Felix drive you home. You are pregnant, Doris. It's not safe to let you go home at this hour by yourself," the old lady offered as soon as Doris stood up and prepared to leave.
Although she was glad to see her after so many years, she couldn't help but fill disappointed. In her heart, she hoped that Doris could be her daughter-in-law, but that would be impossible now, wouldn't it? If only that tragedy didn't happen many years ago, perhaps things would be different now.
However, as much as she wanted to, she couldn't turn back time now.
"It's okay. I can take a taxi," Doris refused in sheer embarrassment.
"What? You think my car is too cheap for you to ride in?" Felix snorted a chuckle and said half-jokingly. He thought that Doris had utterly changed into a different person now that she was married to a wealthy
man.
However, Felix was evidently exaggerating. How could Doris think like that? Sure, it had been years since they last saw each other-which frankly didn't end in good terms--but there was no way she could change into a discriminating woman. She merely refused because she was afraid that Jay would see Felix and cause unnecessary trouble. After all, she was aware of how short-tempered her husband was. "No, auntie is sick. You have to take care of her, so..."
"My mom has been taking good care of herself. She knows I have to work during the day and earn money to buy her medicine. Don't worry. She can stay at home alone. Let's go!" Felix reassured with a smile. And since he insisted, Doris didn't know what to say or do other than follow him outside.
Before finally leaving, she turned and looked at the dilapidated house, which made her heart pound with a touch of bitterness. The house obviously hadn't been repaired for a long time, and judging from its current condition, it would undoubtedly leak on a rainy day.
"Felix, where do you work?" Doris suddenly asked as she followed him outside.
"Wherever there's an available job. Sometimes I work as a delivery man, sometimes somewhere else," he answered lightly, massaging his nape.
"Oh, I see. Do you make enough money?" Doris saw the glint of embarrassment flashing across his face so she couldn't help but ask that with concern.
After all, she had been in his shoes once, and she knew how hard it was to live without money. More than that, Felix still had to look after his sick mother on top of making ends meet.
"Just enough to support me and my mom," he answered. Then, he opened the car and said, "Get in."
After telling him the address, Doris immediately got it. Once she had settled inside, Felix strode to the driver's seat and roared the engine to life.
The two of them chatted along the way and reminisced the good memories they built together as kids. Soon after, they arrived at the Fang family's suburban villa.
"Here?" Felix asked and gazed up at the luxurious villa. He obviously was not expecting such grandiose place for Doris to live in. The tables had really turned, hadn't it?
"Yes," the latter simply replied while unbuckling her seatbelt.
"You married a very capable man, unlike me. He can let you live in such a big house. He... He probably loves you very much, right?"
For a moment, Doris didn't know how to answer. After all, love was something she and Felix had never talked about-it had always been the elephant in the room they never got to address. "Maybe. But I'm not the only woman he likes!" Although Doris flashed him a smile, Felix could see the slight pang of pain that glinted in her eyes. Was she not secure with her husband?
"What? You are not the only woman he likes? Does that mean he is also involved with a lot of women even though you're married?" Felix tried to sound calm, but the thought of Doris being unfairly treated by her wealthy husband bothered him so much. So, after his failed attempt to restrain himself, he scolded, "What kind of man did you marry? I know you have suffered a lot, but you can't marry a man you don't love just for money. You can't!"
Perhaps it was because Felix was too aggravated that he grabbed Doris's wrist without him realizing it.
Suddenly, much to his surprise, a crisp sound was heard.
And the next thing he knew, Doris had aggressively brushed off his arm, causing her to almost lose her balance.
Although Doris was pregnant, she was still really strong.
"What's wrong with you, Doris? I was just worried about you!" Felix asked in astonishment.
"Oh, I am sure you are! But I don't need you to worry for me. Jay is rich and powerful, and I'm very happy to be married to him," Doris uttered in a firm tone. Then, breathing a deep breath, she added, "Thanks for the ride, Felix. Be careful on your way back." After saying that, Doris turned around and walked towards the villa with her staggering steps.
However, Felix chased after her subconsciously.
"What the hell are you doing?" If Jay saw him tailing her, he would definitely kill this man!
"I'm not gonna do anything. I just want to see how that man treats you with my own eyes. Oh, you said that your husband is from a wealthy and influential family, right? Don't you know who we are? We're not like them, Doris! You and that man are not from the same world at all! How can you be happy with him?"
"How can you possibly tell what I'm feeling? I can take care of myself, Felix. So now, please see your way out!" Doris looked up at the villa anxiously, fearing that Jay would suddenly come out and see them. Fortunately, there was no movement inside, and she could see only some of the lights lit.
"Doris, I love you. I always do even after all these years!" Felix confessed in a soft tone. Then, taking a step closer, he held her hand tightly and added, "No one in the world knows you better than I do. Be with me!"
Hearing this sudden revelation, Doris was stunned to her feet. Her eyes grew wide open while her mouth hung agape, and for a while, she was lost for words to say.
Be with Felix? That had been her dream when she was young. And after all those years, he grew into a handsome man she had always imagined.
But dreams did not always mirror reality. And right now, her reality was very different from the life she had imagined as a kid.
It was just her self-deception, a way to trick herself. She lied to Nancy and the others just to numb her pain and protect her poor self-esteem!
After so many years, she had almost forgotten about him!
It had been a very long time after all, and the memory of her past was buried with the tragedy that befell on her and her family.
But now, how could he suddenly appear in her life and ask her to be with him?
