Saving His Feral Mate
Chapter 42: Lunch

Chloe POV

As soon as I walked into the dinner hall, everyone went quiet and all eyes were on me. Although I hated the attention, that wasn’t was truly made me uncomfortable. It was the way Alpha Victor was looking at me, It felt like he was looking into my soul. I wasn’t getting any negative vibes from him, I actually felt a familiar pull that I didn’t understand.

His son on the other hand, held a suspicious look in his eyes when glancing between his father and I.

I was extremely grateful when Knox cleared his throat and got everyone’s attention. I was starting to regret my decision of join them for lunch. I had thought of all the things I wanted to ask, but now that I was there, my courage was slipping away.

I felt Knox’s hand on my thigh and he squeezed it gently. That simple gesture really help calm my nerves. Maybe I was reading too much into things?

Everyone started making small talk at the table, but I could still feel Alpha Victor’s gaze on me. I decided to ignore it and look anywhere but towards him.

“Miss Chloe, how old are you?” Alpha Victor asked out of the blue, catching me completely off guard.

“I’m sorry, you don’t have to answer that.” He added, while shaking his head. He had clearly seen my surprised expression and hesitation to answer. Why would he care how old I am? Is he trying to match me up with his son or something?

“No, that’s quite alright, Alpha Victor. I’m 21.” I replied with a soft smile and he nodded. He looked deep in thought after hearing my answer.

“Such a young lady to be living the life of a rogue, where’s your family?” He asked curiously and my smile dropped. I guess I should be thankful that he was asking these questions, it’s a perfect way for me to find out if he can help me or not.

“The only family I ever knew was my mother, Trisha hart, but she died two years ago.” I replied sadly, but watched him carefully to see his reaction. Alpha Victor eyes grew wide at the mention of my mother, but only for a fraction of a second, before he quickly recomposed himself.

“I’m very sorry for your loss, Miss Chloe.” He said and sounded completely sincere.

“Thank you.” I replied with a soft smile. I noticed his son was paying close attention to our conversation and still had a suspicious look on his face. Everyone else was having their own conversations and weren’t paying attention to us, except for Knox. His hand was still clasped on my thigh possessively and all though he was talking with Alpha Victor’s Beta, I could tell he was listening carefully to our conversation.

“Did you know her?” I asked and was surprised by my own boldness. I guess his expression when I had mentioned her name, piqued my curiosity.

“Your mother? No I didn’t.” He replied truthfully, but I felt like he was holding something back.

Unfortunately, our conversation was interrupted when the kitchen staff entered the room with our lunch.

Everyone was silent while the meal was being served. I thanked the omega that placed a plate down in front of me and she smiled before leaving the hall. All the other omegas did the same.

“Please, enjoy your lunch.” Knox said, before everyone dug into their meal.

I had lost my appetite and mostly moved the food around with my fork. For something I felt like I was missing something, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

“Are you ok?” Knox asked in a low voice, so only I would hear him. I simply nodded and smiled at him. I could tell he didn’t believe me, but I was relieved that he didn’t question me further.

“So, Chloe. How long have you been a rogue?” Xander asked casually, but I could tell he was prodding for information. I wasn’t sure exactly what his intentions were, but I felt like he was interrogating me. I wasn’t necessarily getting negative vibes from him, but he seemed like he had something against me, which didn’t make any sense.

“Two years.” I replied with a forced smile.

“Two years by yourself? In rogue country?” He asked, now sounding shocked.

“Yes.” I replied shortly.

“How? She-wolves rarely survive as rogues.” He asked, but his voice was barely above a whisper. He looked completely dumbfounded.

“How? She-wolves rarely survive as rogues.” He asked, but his voice was barely above a whisper. He looked completely dumbfounded.

“Xander, that’s enough.” His father said sternly, shooting him a warning look.

“No, it’s fine Alpha Victor, I don’t mind. My wolf, Tatiana, got us through it. She’s a fighter.” I replied with another small smile.

“That she is.” Alpha Victor said and I swear I saw a flash of pride in his eyes. I couldn’t be sure though, it was gone as fast as it appeared.

The rest of lunch was uneventful. Once everyone was done eating, Alpha Victor stood from his seat and told us that they needed to return home.

“Thank you for lunch, Alpha Knox, it was delicious.” He said, before shaking Knox’s hand.

“You’re very welcome. Thanks again for sharing your source information with me.” Knox replied with a nod.

“Like I said, I would really hate to see those two gain anymore power then they already have.” Victor replied and I frowned at his words. I wonder who he was referring to?

“Miss Chloe, it was a pleasure meeting you. I hope this won’t be the last time.” He said, before taking my hand and kissing my knuckles. I smiled politely, but also frowned at his words. Did he want to see me again? Why? I had so many questions running through my mind.

I was brought out of my thoughts, when A low, threatening growl left Knox’s throat. That was when I noticed Alpha Victor was still holding onto my hand. Alpha Victor’s eyes widened and he looked between Knox and I, before a knowing smile spread across his face. So much for people not knowing we were mates, I thought to myself. It actually didn’t bother me at all, for some reason I felt comfortable with him knowing.

“I’m very sorry, Alpha. I promise, I was simply being polite.” He chuckled, while putting his hands up in mock surrender.

“No, I’m sorry. I really don’t know where that came from.” Knox said sheepishly, while shaking his head. I almost laughed at the expression on his face. He looked so embarrassed.

“Holy shit.” Alpha Victor’s warrior, Kane, exclaimed.

We all turned our attention towards him to see what he was looking at. That’s when I noticed Max walking down the hallway wearing nothing but her cowboy boots. She was walking away from us and likely didn’t even notice our presence. She was casually swirling her machete around in her hands. I heard a low, possessive growl and knew right away that it was coming from Jo.

“Now I see why you’re so protective.” Alpha Victor chuckled in amusement, while looking at Jo who looked completely flustered.

“Excuse me, I better go and …” Jo started, but was quickly cut off by Knox.

“Go.” Knox said, while shaking his head.

That was all Jo needed to hear, before he took off down the hall towards where Max disappeared.

“I lost count on how many times I’ve said this today, but again, I’m sorry about that.” Knox apologized, looking completely embarrassed.

“Nonsense, this has actually been quite entertaining.” Alpha Victor replied, with an amused grin on his face.

Once we were done saying our goodbyes, Alpha Victor and his men loaded up into a Black SUV that was parked out front. They quickly disappeared down the road and into the thick forest.

I heard Knox let out a deep sigh, drawing my attention to him.

“Are you ok?” I asked with a concerned frown.

“Ya, the meeting just didn’t go the way I want it too.” He admitted, while wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me towards him. He lowered his face into the crook of my neck and inhaled deeply. I think he was doing it subconsciously, he seemed completely lost in his thoughts. Luckily, other than Jag, no one else was around.

What did he want to discuss?” I asked, as I pulled away from him so that I could see his face. He hesitated before answering, which made me frown. Why was he being hesitant?

“Let’s go to my office, we can talk about it there.” He replied and I could hear the concern in his voice. It made me feel uneasy.

“Jag, you’re free to go. I want to talk with Chloe alone.” He told Jag, who was still standing next to him.

“Got it. Mind-link me if you need anything.” Jag replied before leaving us.

We headed to Knox’s office and I could feel the tension surrounding us. My mind was working overtime, trying to figure out what he would say.

Once we finally reached his office, he opened the door and motioned for me to go in. As soon as I was inside, I turned around to look at him with my arms crossed over my chest.

“What is it Knox? You’re freaking me out.” I said nervously.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to freak you out. I don’t want to keep anything from you, so I’ll tell you the truth. But first, I need you to believe that you will always be safe here, ok? He said, while grabbing my arms and looking deep into my eyes.

“I trust you, Knox.” I replied truthfully, but it didn’t help the uneasy feeling stirring in my stomach.

“Alpha Victor came to warn me.” He said and paused for a second before continuing.

“He heard that Alpha Cameron and Alpha Alec, are planning an attacking my pack. Alpha Cameron knows you’re staying on my territory.” He explained and I felt the colour drain from my face. How could Alpha Cameron know I’m here? I haven’t even left the territory? Am I the reason they want to attack? Am I putting this entire pack at risk, just by staying here?

“Stop, please. I know what you’re thinking and I need you to stop. This isn’t your fault. They’ve wanted my land for as long as I can remember. You’re not the only reason, Chloe.” He tried to reassure me, but it didn’t work.

“When?” I asked and my voice was barely above a whisper.

“We don’t know, but the source seems to think it will happen soon.” He said cautiously.

“Chloe, I’ll never let anything happen to you. I would sacrifice my life to keep you safe.” He said and that was exactly what worried me the most, I knew he was telling the truth. My mother already died because of me, now this entire pack was in danger because of my presence here.

“Say something Chloe, do you trust me?” He pleaded.

“I do, I trust you with my life, but…” I replied and he quickly cut me off.

“No buts… I told you the truth, now I need you to do the same. Before you you do anything, promise me that you’ll talk to me first.” He once again pleaded and I could see the desperation in his eyes.

“I promise, but I need time to think. I want to go see Betty and Tom.” I said and knew right away that he wouldn’t like the idea. I could see him thinking before he finally replied.

“Will you let me come with you? I promise, I’ll give you alone time with Betty and Tom once we get there.” He asked looking stressed.

“Sure, if that will make you feel better.” I replied with a small smile and watched him let out a relieved breath.

If I was being completely honest, I was worried about Betty and Tom. They aren’t getting any younger, what if Alpha Cameron or Alpha Alec, went after them? They wouldn’t be able to defend themselves. Maybe I can convince them to stay on Knox’s territory until this all blows over.

“Is it ok if we go tomorrow? I have a few things I need to take care of around here first.” He asked.

“Tomorrow is fine. I want to get some supplies ready for them anyway. Why don’t you take care of your business and I’ll go pack some supplies for Betty and Tom.” I suggested.

“Ok, I’ll come find you when I’m done.” He replied and leaned down to k**s my lips. I could still feel his uneasiness and I hated that I wasn’t able to take it away.

“We will deal with this together, ok. Please don’t worry about me.” I said in an attempted to reassure him. He smiled down at me, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

“I’ll always worry about you.” He replied and his tone nearly broke my heart.

I wish I could kill Alpha Cameron, that would fix all of our problems. That piece of s**t doesn’t deserve to breath. I hope karma bites him in the a*s.
