Rejected, Then Reborn -
Chapter 91
Reed came out of his study looking for his wife, but she was nowhere to be seen.
And so, though the thought of it hurt him deeply, he had no choice but to go and check with her sisters, who dare he say were quickly becoming the bane of his existence. He had left her with them after all, hadn’t he?
But to his surprise, when he made his way over to their room, she wasn’t there too.
“She actually told us she was coming to get you, Your Majesty,” Elise explained, she and her sister surprised.
“Perhaps she thought you were outside or something?” Eliana chipped in.
Reed nodded. Perhaps that was where she was after all.
He turned to leave without another word, but one of the sisters, (he didn’t know which) called out his name.
It turned out to be Elise. “We want to apologise for how we behaved earlier,” She started, she and her sister looking like repentant adolescents even with their tall, slender frames. He sometimes forgot that his mate was the youngest, given how she was mostly the mature one among them.
“It was rude, it was uncalled for, and we never meant for it to happen that way. We’re really sorry.” Eliana joined in.
Reed shot them both a small smile.
I mean, he could understand where they were coming from, being super happy for their youngest and yet wanting to rile her up like any normal sibling would.
Heck, even he could relate, having behaved this way a couple of times towards Anaya. It was just normal sibling nature, one that he certainly did not have to hold a grudge over. Not when they had so blatantly apologized that is.
“It’s alright.” He said, “Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go find my wife now.”
Lacy was not outside too when the Alpha King made his way out to the castle courtyards, and then to the gardens.
She wasn’t at the stables, she wasn’t at the parking lot, she wasn’t at the sparring room…
Reed was honestly starting to get worried.
The Alpha King’s worry continued to mount as he searched for Lacy throughout the castle grounds. He checked every nook and cranny, every room and every corner, but she was nowhere to be found.
As he did a second take of the gardens, he began to consider the possibility that something may have happened to her. He could feel her through the mate bond and she seemed to be calm and at peace.
That was the only thing that had stopped him from calling out a full on search party. Besides, something told him she was still on the castle grounds.
And so, he continued to search… but just when he was about to exit the gardens, he heard a faint sound coming from one of the nearby trees. He rushed over and found Lacy, sitting on a branch with tears in her eyes.
The sight alone broke his heart, but he tried to stay calm even as he climbed up to sit next to her.
“My love… what’s wrong?” Reed.
Lacy sniffled, wiping away her tears. “I’m sorry, Reed. I just—I just needed some time alone,” She said, her voice barely above a whisper. “My hormones seem to be haywire all of a sudden, I really don’t know what’s happening.”
The Alpha King wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close. “You never have to apologize for needing time to yourself, my love,” He said, gently kissing the top of her head. “But you had me worried. I was searching all over for you. You could have just left me a tiny message through the bond.”
“I know, my love… I know, and I’m sorry.” The Dark Queen replied, leaning into his embrace.
Reed nodded understandingly. “I get it. It’s seriously fine, Lace. But you don’t have to face all of this alone, you know that right? I’m here for you, always.”
He knew that he was the luckiest man in the world to have found such a wonderful mate, and he vowed to cherish her always, doing everything in his power to make her happy and keep her safe, for as long as they both lived.
Lacy smiled weakly, looking up at him. “I know, and I appreciate that more than words can say. You’re my rock, Reed. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Reed kissed her forehead, holding her tight. “You’ll never have to find out, love. I’ll always be here for you, no matter what.”
Together they sat in silence for a few moments, enjoying each other’s company and the peacefulness of the garden.
But Lacy started to drift off, and then Reed didn’t think it safe any longer.
He flung her over his shoulder gently, and then the powerful Alpha King made his way down, someway somehow making the whole impressive show seemingly effortless and without struggle.
When he was finally down, he carried her bridal style and took her right to their room where he gently lay her on the bed, cozying up right next to her.
As they lay there, the Alpha King couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of love and protectiveness for his mate.
He knew that he would do anything to make her happy and keep her safe, even if it meant putting his own life on the line. Heck, if he could take this emotional mess she was feeling like upon himself, he knew he’s do so in a heartbeat so long as it meant that he’d get to see her smile a genuine smile once again.
But he knew that that was impossible.
That the least he could do was be there for her in anyway she needed him. For now, it seemed that having her all snuggled up to him was enough.
Lacy snuggled into her mate’s warm embrace, feeling safe and secure in his arms.
She knew without a doubt that she could always count on him to be there for her no matter what, and she was grateful for his love and support, and knew that she could never find anyone who would love her as much as he did.
She had certainly gotten lucky with this Goddess arrangement.
Lacy succumbed to sleep’s warm embrace, and Reed joined her not long after, both man and mate perfectly content. It felt nice to be able to sleep and not worry about anything else for once.
But as the days passed, Lacy’s hormones continued to fluctuate wildly.
She would have moments of extreme happiness and joy, followed by bouts of sadness and despair.
Reed did his best to comfort her, holding her close and reassuring her that everything would be okay, and the clinic tried to come up with every possible way to help, but given her immense power, no one could pinpoint what exactly was wrong.
The Alpha King was seriously worried.
Worried and desperate. Desperate to the extent that he wanted to have his best friend return so he could also check and see what was wrong with his wife, but Lacy made him swear that he would not do that.
“Xavier needs all the time he can get to win Anaya’s heart,” She’d say softly, “Promise me you won’t let him come back, Reed. I’m fine. I’m pretty sure it’s my period approaching. This is going to be the first time I’m having it with Aura present in me. Perhaps, that is why there are changes.”
Her words of assurance and the conscious efforts she’d make would put him off for a while.
But despite his unwavering support, the Dark Queen continued to struggle.
She would often cry for no reason, feeling overwhelmed by her emotions.
Reed did his best to be patient and understanding, knowing that she was going through a difficult time.
One morning, Lacy woke up feeling particularly low.
She didn’t want to get out of bed, and she didn’t want to face the day. Reed could sense her sadness through their mate bond, and he knew that he needed to do something to lift her spirits, but right before he could do that, she drifted off into a peaceful slumber… one of the most peaceful ones she had had in a while.
Reed let her snuggle up to him, silently praying to whoever cared to listen to make her all better by the time she woke up.
The Alpha King himself was just standing on the precipice of sleep when he heard something.
A heartbeat.
It wasn’t his… he knew that for sure, and it certainly wasn’t Lacy’s.
Her vampiric side had drastically slowed down her heartbeat. In fact, there were days when he didn’t even catch anything at all.
But this one was different.
It was vibrant.
It was full of life.
It wanted everyone who cared to listen to listen. It wanted to be seen. Wanted to be heard.
The Alpha King couldn’t help it, he gently shook his wife awake, indescribable joy on his face. “LACY, WE’RE GOING TO BE PARENTS! I CAN HEAR OUR CHILD’S HEARTBEAT!”
The Dark Queen could only stare at him in a mixture of shock and fear and sleep and disbelief.
