My Mate Is An Omega -
Chapter 51
Caitlyn POV
At first, I was thrilled. Whether it was my own desire to finally live peacefully or Lance's happiness flowing into me through the mate bond, I was overwhelmed with joy. After helping him wash away the blood from the fight, we laid down in bed to rest. I rested my head on his chest, excitedly listening to how the plan we worked hard on had brought them victory. We eventually fell asleep, and that was one of the best nights of my life.
However, as the sun took the place of the moon in the lilac sky, my excitement too was replaced by unquietness.
As we did our morning routine, my mate didn't seem to notice my silent agitation. The outcome of the battle was perfect - too perfect. The longer I thought about the details I had been told, the more unexpected occurrences I seemed to be able to find. I tried to ignore the unpleasant feeling that kept me from celebrating with the rest of my pack, but I just couldn't seem to shake it. Every time I had those weird hunches in the past, something bad happened.
We had breakfast in the Alpha suite before heading to the office to "close the case." I was mostly quiet, but Lance had a huge smile on his face as he ran his eyes over the fresh documents regarding their win. It made me feel torn; I wanted to be happy with him, be happy for him, yet I simply couldn't. My suspicions only grew as I carefully read the few pages over and over again.
"What's wrong?" my mate finally asked, startling me.
I slowly lifted my head up to look at Lance, who was standing behind me next to the clear windows. I just remained silent for a while, unwilling to ruin his exhilaration with my unfounded doubts. He eventually sighed, crouching in front of me to stay at eye level. When his fingers traced my jawline, I leaned into his touch, relaxing a bit.
"You have been quiet all morning, and the shine you had in your eyes last night suddenly faded," he pointed out. "So, what's wrong?"
"In the reports, it says all of the bears were adults. No cubs were found, not even in the surrounding area," I finally revealed in a low voice. "Don't you think it's a little weird?"
I thought he would be mad at me for letting my insecurities get the best of me, or worried about the point I was making. Instead, he seemed relieved - almost as if he was grateful that I decided to voice my concerns. He sat down in his chair beside me, pulling me closer to him.
"I thought so too in the beginning," he confessed, surprising me. "However, according to our head tracker's analysis, these bears probably hadn't been together for a long time. A year at most. Considering mating season usually starts around June for them, it makes sense." He looked away for a moment, hesitant. "We also found a pregnant female among the enemies we killed, which supports this theory."
As soon as he mentioned that, my heart ached in my chest. I knew the bears were our enemies; they brought terror to our home and coldly murdered many innocent wolves. They even took down our leader, almost causing our pack to collapse. Still, part of me couldn't help but think how cruel it was for a mother and her unborn cub to die, caught in the crossfire. Judging by Lance's ashamed semblance when he turned back to me, I knew that my feelings were written all over my face.
"As sad as it is, it was their choice. They took the lives of our family and friends without hesitation, so I ordered our warriors to do the same. We were forced to hunt them down, otherwise we would be the ones mourning our losses right now," he explained, trying to justify our actions. It didn't sound wrong, but for me, violence was never the right answer. "Is there something else bothering you?" His voice was sweet as he rubbed his thumb against the back of my hand.
"It's just... it all seemed so easy. They were so confident about attacking us repeatedly, and one time was all it took to defeat them?"
"There were ninety seven bears living inside that cave, all of which have been taken down by our army. The number is similar to what we expected to find, considering the huge loss they had during their previous attack." At that moment, I realized that my mate had already studied the situation; he probably had the same questions I had, and he immediately sought answers for them. Maybe this time, I should put my troubles aside and trust him. "I understand why you're worried, Cait, but you might be overthinking." I guess you're right." I sighed in defeat, forcing a smile. Lance seemed pleased with my reaction.

"Well, as you know..." A small smirk crossed his face as he rose from his seat, taking both of my hands in his to help me up. "I gave the entire pack the day off so they can celebrate. I was thinking maybe we could do the same." He gently snaked his hand around my waist, pulling me closer. Shivers ran down my spine when his nose touched mine. "We can have a nice, romantic date outside, or just chill in our room," he whispered, leaning into my ear. "What do you say?"
"Sounds amazing," I chuckled as I slightly pulled away.
"But?" He c****d his head to the side, confused.
"The girls invited me to hang out today. We will meet at the community bar after lunch to celebrate." The way his face fell at my revelation told me he was looking forward to spending the day with me, and I felt a pinch of guilt for not considering what he would like to do. "I can call it off if you want to," I immediately suggested, cupping the side of his face with my hand.
He shook his head. In the blink of an eye, the sweet smile was back to his face. "It's alright... as long as you come back to me soon." He pressed his lips against mine, briefly sending me to paradise as I enjoyed his mesmerizing taste. "I just want to see you happy," he added, looking into my eyes as he pulled away.
"Don't worry, I'll be back before sundown. We will still have a lot of time to celebrate by ourselves," I reassured him, shifting my gaze to the digital clock over the table before turning back to him. "Are you ready for lunch yet?"
"I'm always ready to do anything with you." He interlaced our fingers, leading me out of the room.
Since I would be spending the afternoon with the Beta Female and the Delta, we decided to have our meal in our room. Once we were done, I got dressed in a navy blue dress with a yellow floral pattern. Lance told me he would meet the boys at the game room, so we walked downstairs together. I heard Megan's laughter as soon as I stepped outside. She was so loud I didn't need to have werewolf hearing to notice her. It immediately brought a smile to my face; she was my best friend, and I loved every single trait that constituted her strong personality.
She was standing behind the counter with Sasha sitting on a stool right in front of her. They both turned to look at me when I was just a few feet away from the bar. Coming here always warmed my heart - this establishment was proof of what us wolves were capable of accomplishing when we worked together, and it was the starting point for the biggest initiative Lance and I took as leaders.
"Finally! What took you so long?" the Beta Female yelled jokingly. "We were about to get started without you."
"Oh you know, I was busy with usual Luna stuff." I shrugged nonchalantly.
"Bullshit! Everyone was given a day off today," she argued.
"Leaders are never not working." I sat down beside the Delta, who gave me a quick hug. "Anyway, what were you two laughing about?"
"Sasha was just telling me about the day she insisted on sparring with you, and how you didn't last a second."
I instantly turned to the black-haired girl, faking betrayal. "I can't believe you let her corrupt you like that!"
"Sorry, Cait," Sasha smiled apologetically at me.
"You're just too funny, babe. Don't blame her." My best friend winked at me as she pulled out a bottle of Patrón and showed it to me. "A Tequila Sunrise for you?"
I opened my mouth to reply, but hesitated. Although I had never been a huge fan of partying, I usually enjoyed having a few drinks with my friends. However, I didn't really feel like drinking today. Not even Faye seemed excited about the idea, which was odd to say the least. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood to celebrate yet because of my concerns from earlier.
"Actually, I think I'll just have some orange juice."
"Aw, come on, Luna! We've all been working really hard lately. Now that our efforts have paid off, we deserve a toast! With alcohol!" Sasha insisted, but behind her happy face, I noticed a hint of concern. She was smart, and probably realized something was wrong. However, I wouldn't let my worries get to them, especially not after I had talked to Lance about them and realized they were quite foolish.
"It's okay, I'm content just sitting here and spending time with you." My sincerity seemed to convince them. "Plus, staying sober while you get drunk will give me a good opportunity to get some dirt on you. Maybe then you'll stop talking about me," I teased. "Now I'm scared. Just kidding, I'm not." Megan shrugged, smiling proudly as she handed the Delta a drink similar to the one she was holding. It looked like Piña Colada. "More for us, girl!" She raised her glass.
Sasha immediately mimicked her. "To our friendship!" The woman smiled brightly, wrapping her free arm around my neck. "And to peace. May Diamond Tempest thrive now."
"May Diamond Tempest thrive!" My best friend and I replied in unison.
The rest of the afternoon was awesome. Despite not drinking with them, I got a good laugh, especially once they started getting tipsy. We had all been so busy adjusting to our new positions that we barely had time to hang out together, which is why I really treasured this rare occasion.
Little by little, the pack members who were enjoying their free day of celebration around the town square joined us. The Beta Female happily prepared drinks for all of them, and even taught some of her warriors the basics about bartending. By sunset, they were too drunk and caught up in the party to remember I was still there - well, at least Megan was. I said my goodbyes to Sasha, who was keeping an eye on my best friend to make sure she wouldn't stain her reputation, and returned to my room. Now that I was finally at ease, I couldn't wait to spend some time with my mate.
Lance was already waiting for me in the Alpha suite, lying in bed in only his black boxers, if I may add. He seemed thoughtful as he stared out the window, but a smile lit up his face the second he saw me walk in. He promptly jumped to his feet; I couldn't even ask him how his day was before his hands grasped my waist firmly, making me forget everything else. When he dove his nose into the crook of my neck, breathing in my scent, I felt his erection press against my stomach through the thin fabric of his underwear. "You smell especially good tonight," he hissed, tightening his grip around me. His words made me melt, and I fought to hold in a moan.
"What do you mean?" I chuckled. "Shouldn't I smell the same as always?"
"I don't know, but it's different," he insisted, a low growl reverberating in his throat as he took another deep breath. "The spiciness died down a little. Your scent is even sweeter than usual. Less like tequila and more like..." He made a brief pause, concentrating on analyzing my fragrance. "Honey liqueur."
I couldn't hold back my laughter. "Do I always smell like alcohol to you?"
When he pulled away, his eyes were darker, and he had a sassy smirk on his face. "I guess it's because your scent is enough to get me drunk."
He didn't wait another second before kneeling in front of me, his eyes still locked on mine. My mate, my Alpha, my fiancé, was on his knees for me and it was quite a sight to see. I could feel heat pooling between my legs as he slowly rolled up the hem of my sundress just above my stomach. The first few times he had me, I was always shy about being naked in front of him. However, after having him so many times, all I could feel was desire.
Lance was always gentle and loving; he took his time to make me feel good. The way he worshiped me truly made me feel like a goddess. I instinctively moved my fingers to the back of his head, grasping his hair as his tongue drew circles around my belly button. He proceeded to trail kisses all the way down my stomach, and when his lips finally pressed against my most sensitive spot, I let out a moan.
However, the second I let my head fall backwards, my pleasure was entirely replaced by dizziness.
I abruptly opened my eyes again to find the room spinning, and I completely lost my balance. If it weren't for my mate's fast reflexes, I would have certainly fallen to the floor, but he managed to catch me just in time. He held me in place for a moment, his wide eyes locked on mine. It took me a while for me to come back to my senses. And when I finally did, my heart was beating fast.
"What happened?" There was only concern in his voice.
I was speechless for a moment, trying to catch my breath. "I think I experienced vertigo," I finally guessed, trying to understand the situation myself. "I'm fine now. It's no big deal." Honestly, I couldn't tell if I was trying to comfort him or myself. "Except it is." He helped me stand back up, never taking his hands off me in case I lost balance again. "Cait, wolves don't have vertigo. Not unless something's wrong."
"I'm sure it's nothing."
"It could be something," he insisted, moving a strand of my hair behind my ear to have a clear view of my face. "Please, beautiful, let me take you to the pack hospital. Just to be sure."
"Don't you think you're overreacting a little?"
"When it comes to you, I'd rather be safe than sorry."
After a few seconds, I noticed he wouldn't let it go. "Alright. If it makes you feel better."
"I will feel better once I know you're okay."
My mate threw on a shirt and boxers before helping me put my dress back on. He wanted to carry me to the hospital, but I insisted I could walk just fine - which didn't stop him from holding me tightly by the waist all the way there. As we walked through the white halls, I curiously analyzed my surroundings. The only reason why a werewolf would be brought to be here was if they had serious injuries during training or battles, but since I wasn't a warrior, I rarely visited the place.
As soon as we arrived, one of the two pack doctors promptly came to us. I explained what happened, and the face he made let me know Lance was right about this being serious. A few nurses came into our room to draw some of my blood to run tests, while the doctor examined me. In the end, he insisted we should get an ultrasound done just to be safe. My mate was just as confused as I was as we stared at the black screen. When the doctor gasped in surprise, he almost gave us both a heart attack. "Is it bad?" Lance's heart was beating so loud I could easily hear it.
"Not at all; it's wonderful." There was a mix of surprise and joy in the old man's face as he turned to me. "Congratulations, Luna. You are carrying the pack's heir."
What?! Did he mean I was... pregnant? How?
"Really, Cait?" Faye scoffed. "I would be more surprised if we weren't pregnant by now."
When Lance turned to me with shock, I felt my hands getting sweaty. "Heir? She's... We're having... a pup?" he stammered out.
"Precisely." The doctor nodded. "I will leave you two to celebrate. I'll come back shortly so we can run some extra tests to make sure the pup is in good health," he told us before closing the door behind him.
For a few more seconds, my mate and I just stared at each other, both unable to believe what was happening. We knew this could happen, but we had never talked about having pups before. How could we? There was just so much going on; we didn't have time to discuss our future. Never before did I find it so hard to read Lance's emotions, and it was killing me. Was he happy? Was he sad? Was he afraid? I was a little afraid.
But when my man finally smiled at me, all of my worries disappeared.
"I can't believe it. This is perfect, beautiful!" he yelled in joy as he rushed over to me, his eyes watery.
"Is it?" I asked in a shaky voice.
"Aren't you happy?" His face fell for a moment as he analyzed my expression.
"I-I think so. It's just... so sudden," I confessed, rubbing my hand over my belly. There was a pup growing inside of me? This was too surreal.
"It is," Lance agreed, brushing my hair with his fingers to soothe me. However, nothing calmed me down more than his sweet, radiant smile. "But the timing couldn't be more perfect. This is the best prize I could win."
I found myself subconsciously returning the gesture. "You're right. He came at the right time."
"He?" My mate looked at me with a puzzled expression, and for a second, I was confused too.
"I don't know why, but I somehow feel like it's a boy," I told him.
"It doesn't matter. Whether it's a boy or a girl, I'll love them the same way," he said truthfully, placing his hand over mine.
"I'm sure you will." Honestly, I was still a bit scared, but I trusted him. He said I was his anchor, but he was my rock; as long as he was by my side, I knew I would be fine. "This pup couldn't have a better father." "Or a better mother," he added, resting his forehead against mine. "I love you so much, Cait."
"And I love you," I reminded him.
For the next few minutes, we just laughed and cried in joy. For the first time, I truly believed we would be alright.
