Chapter 083 Daddy, you have to doggedly chase!

The wind picked up, chilling Galatea's body.

Galatea tightened her jacket around her, feeling more disordered than before.

She looked back at Alaric, who had gone inside the cabin, and she didn't know whether to follow him or to leave. What had started as a heartwarming birthday celebration had now turned into a confrontation with a completely different atmosphere.

At sea, with only each other for company, Galatea had no choice but to steel herself and return to the cabin to face Alaric.

"About earlier, if something I said upset you, I-" she began.

"You didn't say anything wrong," Alaric cut her off. "I was the one who wanted to get the marriage license from the start. It was all wishful thinking on my part.

"If you want to refuse, I respect that. From now on, you're just my fiancée in name. All I ask is that you play the part in public. Other than that, I won't force anything. Is that acceptable, Dr. Galatea?"

Galatea felt like she had a fishbone stuck in her throat. Could he really be devoid of emotion when saying this?

He had mentioned needing a wife earlier that evening, yet she hadn't refused. She had merely tried to clarify her stance upfront, and that had set him off.

"It's getting late. I have an early meeting tomorrow. I'm going to bed," Alaric announced, curtly ending the conversation before Galatea could say more. "Alright, goodnight," was all Galatea managed to say softly.

Galatea wasn't sure if Alaric had actually fallen asleep. However, seeing him close his eyes and not making any effort to continue the conversation, she took the hint and quietly left the bedroom, making her way back to the deck. As she looked up at the night sky, the ocean's nocturnal beauty was breathtaking. All she could hear was the comforting sound of the waves.

Galatea settled herself directly onto the deck, Alaric's words echoing in her mind, along with the memory of how meticulously he had cared for her at the hospital.

"He wouldn't have stayed by your side in the hospital if he didn't have feelings for you," a voice in her head suddenly whispered, reflecting Mia's past comment.

Was she really that oblivious? Could Alaric actually harbor affection for her? She had never allowed herself to entertain such a thought; the mere idea was something she dreaded. Galatea couldn't help but mock herself, "Oh, Stellan Storm, how pitiful you are now."

What had happened in the past was her dark history, too difficult to speak of with anyone.

She was deeply conflicted. On one hand, she desperately wanted to find Mrs. Marigold to retrieve her eldest son, and on the other, she didn't want to suffer through this injustice.

Aside from that one man, she hadn't compromised herself with anyone else. She was certain the child was his. The DNA test results Mrs. Marigold had shown her must have been wrong, although she didn't know where the error lay. After finding Mrs. Marigold, she wanted to clear things up, but she was also afraid to do so. What if she did clear it up and Mrs. Marigold refused to return her child and took Elisa away again? With such a significant issue unresolved, she truly wasn't in the right frame of mind to think about love or to entertain the idea of marriage.

Galatea sighed with hesitation and glanced towards the cabin. He must be really asleep by now, right? But for some reason, she couldn't fall asleep.

She had upset him, so Galatea tried to be especially well-behaved.

Early the next morning, she obediently waited outside the bedroom.

"Are you awake?" Galatea asked eagerly as he came out of the bedroom.

"Uh-huh." Alaric replied lazily, adding, "After the yacht docks, I'll take you home first. I'm going to be particularly busy for the next couple of days. I'll call you on the day of the kick-off banquet." "Okay." She assumed he didn't want to see her for a few days.

Afterward, just as Alaric had said, the yacht docked and he took her home first.

Regarding the previous evening's events, Galatea said, "Thank you so much for celebrating my birthday last night, I'm also really sorry for upsetting you."

"It's fine, it was my fault," replied Alaric in a tone that was surprisingly gentle. "You should get back now. You're still recovering, so don't work too late, being an online doctor." "I know, you too."

"Uh-huh." Alaric acknowledged, then turned and walked away.

Galatea watched him leave, suddenly feeling a sense of guilt.

...

Alaric had just returned to the company when his phone rang. It was Harry calling.

"Daddy!" Harry exclaimed excitedly upon Alaric answering, "Did you celebrate Mommy's birthday last night? Was it super romantic?"

Harry had been afraid of interrupting their time together the previous evening, so he had restrained from calling Alaric. Now, he couldn't hold back anymore.

"It was okay," Alaric replied nonchalantly.

"Just okay?" Harry was taken aback, "With the yacht decorated so warmly, Mommy should have been moved to tears. How could it just be okay?"

The yacht's decorations were entirely Harry's concept, inspired by his understanding of his mother's preferences. She cherished ceremonial sentiments, nurtured a princess-like spirit within, and had a profound appreciation for romance. How could yesterday's birthday surprise be just be okay? She should have been so touched that they would end up hugging and kissing, acknowledging that what's done was done.

At this, Alaric just gave a wry smile and said, "Caspian, your wishful thinking didn't really pan out this time. The mommy you're so sure of isn't that easy to win over, got it?"

"I don't quite understand. Do you mean that it's tough to pursue my mom?" Caspian replied, with an innocence that made Alaric momentarily lose words. This kid's translations were spot on.

"Then you should just keep at it, doggedly," said Harry. "I finally nodded in agreement to let you chase after her; you can't just give up that easily. As the saying goes, the harder something is to get, the more precious it is. You have to really go for it!"

Alaric couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time. "You sure know a lot for a little guy."

"Just telling it like it is," Caspian replied with a grin.

"Alright, Caspian. Daddy's gotta work now. See you tonight."

"Okay, Daddy. See you tonight."

After hanging up, Alaric let out another wry smile. Chase after her doggedly? He, a high-and-mighty tycoon, never imagined he'd stoop to this level.

...

When Galatea got home, she was feeling pretty down. But the moment she stepped through the door, she caught Mia's look.

How should she describe it? It was the kind of mischievous, knowing grin that seemed to say she was onto their little secret. "Back already?" Mia asked with a smile.

"Yeah," Galatea hurriedly tried to explain, "When I got his call yesterday, I didn't expect him to take me out, so I—"

"I know," Mia interrupted with a knowing look. "A special birthday surprise. That's what young people in love do these days." Young people in love?

"It's not like that, Mia. I'm not in a relationship with him," Galatea quickly clarified.

"The flirting stage before dating," Mia suggested. "I've never been in love myself, but I know enough to recognize the signs." The flirting stage before dating?
