Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 46 Don't You Lay a Finger on Her!
Two days had passed, and while Galatea did not experience another fever, she remained unconscious.
Alaric had never found time so excruciating or fear so crippling.
He was terrified that Galatea might never awaken or that she would emerge with amnesia or cognitive damage. It was an ordeal that left him utterly restless. Alaric sat beside her hospital bed, gently dabbing her cracked, bleeding lips with a moistened cotton swab, then carefully wiped her hands with warm water.
Her hand was bruised blue and green from the IV needles, so he handled it delicately to avoid causing her any pain.
The sound of a knock startled him, and what surprised him even more was the person who entered. It was Cormac. "How did you get here?"
How could Cormac know that Galatea had been in an accident and was hospitalized?
"I was bored, thought I'd grab a drink with you. You weren't at your office, and after asking Silas Moon, I found out about Galatea's accident." Cormac glanced towards the unconscious Galatea and hastily asked, "How is she doing? Is it serious?"
Alaric's silence and furrowed brow gave Cormac all the answers he needed.
"That's unfortunate," Cormac remarked, then moved closer to the bed with the intention of gently pulling back her blanket, but Alaric immediately grabbed his hand to stop him. "What are you doing?"
"I'm a doctor. I just want to see the extent of her injuries," Cormac said.
"You're a psychiatrist!"
"True, I'm a psychiatrist, but I've also studied surgery. I know what I'm doing," Cormac rebutted.
"Don't you lay a finger on her!" Alaric warned fiercely.
Cormac was left both amused and frustrated, having no choice but to let go, couldn't resist teasing, "You think so low of me? She's injured. Do you really think I'd take advantage of her?" Alaric remained silent, prompting Cormac to keep quiet as well.
"You're really smitten, huh?" Cormac guessed after seeing Alaric in such an anxious state, "Judging by those dark circles, you haven't slept in days, right?"
"Fine, no jokes," Cormac said with all seriousness. "Looks like she's been hit hard. Take good care of her. Folks who go through unexpected misfortune can be emotional, prone to outbursts, so be extra patient with her." "No need to remind me," Alaric commanded instead. "Keep the news of Galatea's car accident from Caspian, will you?"
"Understood." Cormac cast another glance at the unconscious Galatea, then said to Alaric, "Take care of her, and call me if you need anything."
Alaric remained silent.
After Cormac left, Alaric sighed deeply and hesitantly; and continued to sit by the bedside. He whispered softly, "Galatea, can you hear me? If you can, try to wake up. Think about your two kids. They're both waiting for you." Another sleepless night passed, and after three consecutive long nights without rest, Alaric was barely holding on. Just before dawn, he slumped over the edge of the bed and dozed off.
Alaric didn't know how long he had been asleep, but he was jolted awake when there was a slight stir from the bed.
Looking at Galatea, her body writhed uncomfortably, twitching in pain much like the seizures she had during a fever, her features contorted.
Finally, her eyes opened, but she looked like she was in pure agony. Alaric asked hurriedly, "What's wrong?"
As soon as Alaric spoke, Galatea began to heave uncomfortably, instinctively trying to prop herself up to vomit onto the floor, but any movement caused her piercing pain. "Don't move. You're covered in injuries," said Alaric without a second thought as he tried to help, but Galatea hadn't eaten anything for so long.
She had nothing to throw up. It was just dry heaving, looking incredibly painful.
Alaric quickly called for a doctor, who came to examine her. Galatea managed to utter, "My head hurts so much."
It was the splitting headache that had woken her, a pain so intense she couldn't sleep anymore.
The pain felt as if her head would explode, with every part of her body aching as if thousands of insects were gnawing at her wounds.
Agony beyond bearing, a torture worse than death!
"Doctor, why does her head hurt like this? Is it related to her head injury?"
"Yes," the doctor said, "I'm giving her a shot of painkiller right now, but it'll take some time for the medication to take effect. She'll have to bear through the pain on her own."
After the injection, the doctor instructed Alaric, "Make sure to keep her still. Don't let her move around too much, and definitely keep her from touching her wounds to prevent further infection." "Okay," Alaric hurriedly replied.
Since the car accident, Galatea's mind had been in a dormant state, not knowing when she began to have subconscious thoughts.
Painful memories flashed through her mind like a movie, and she felt agony. The pain was not just physical. It was heart-wrenching, yet she couldn't open her eyes, cry out, or even move.
A voice inside her seemed to say incessantly, "Mom, Dad, I'm coming to find you."
Now her eyes were open, but her consciousness still couldn't distinguish between hallucinations and dreams.
"Galatea, don't move around, just hang in there. The medicine will kick in soon, and the pain will subside."
Alaric held her hands gently, careful not to cause more pain, considering the numerous needle marks on the back of them. He bent over and embraced her lightly, continuously talking to soothe her. After a while, Alaric, drenched in sweat from nervousness, felt Galatea's struggle cease. She, too, was covered in sweat, breathing heavily in a ragged way.
"How are you feeling? Is the pain lessening?" Alaric asked with concern.
Galatea was too weak to speak now, her eyes empty as they met Alaric's, sending a fresh wave of fear through him.
'Has she lost her memory? Is her cognitive function affected?'
"Galatea, don't scare me. Tell me, who am I? What's my name?"
Galatea looked blankly at Alaric for a long while before murmuring his name, "Alaric."
Hearing her recall his name, Alaric breathed a sigh of relief. If she remembered him, that was a good sign.
"Galatea, you're covered in injuries and you're weak. Don't talk right now. Just lie down and rest. Let me know if you feel discomfort, anywhere."
The painkiller began to slowly alleviate the physical aches, and her consciousness gradually cleared.
She had been on her way to Nexus Innovations when the accident occurred. Who brought her to the hospital and what happened after were unknown to her. Why Alaric was there was even more of a mystery.
