Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 393 The Second Argument
In that split second, when Cormac and Rowena got wind of the incident, they bolted to the hospital. They showed up just in time to catch Tommy, sporting a bandage on his forehead, heading out. Tommy spilled the beans that they were still
inside, so the duo hustled over. Before they even laid eyes on anyone, Alaric's scolding voice hit their ears.
Alaric's tone was sharp, and Stellan bit her lip, then dropped her head, mumbling, "I'm sorry, Alaric. I didn't see this coming. I thought they were gunning for me. If I didn't apologize, they'd keep coming after the company, which would be bad news. So I..."
Alaric cut her off, "Why do you always go rogue? How many times have you said sorry to me lately? If you knew you'd have to apologize later, why'd you do it in the first place? At my mom's birthday bash, you showed up without a heads-up. And now, here we are again. You don't respect or trust me. Do you even see me as your husband?"
"Alaric!" Cormac rushed over, cutting him off.
Usually, they would stay out of this, but they were in a hospital, and Alaric's words were pretty brutal. Stellan was already in tears from the scolding.
"This is a hospital. Whatever you gotta say, save it for home." Cormac pulled Alaric aside and led him to his car, while Stellan hopped into Rowena's ride.
"You were too rough on Galatea in front of everyone," Cormac couldn't help but say once they were in the car. "She might've messed up, but she feels responsible. The internet's already tearing her apart, demanding an apology. She didn't want to drag the company down, so she went today."
Alaric was fuming, ready to blow a gasket. He was worried sick about Stellan. After Marigold's recent accident, he couldn't handle it if anything happened to Stellan.
Reporters could be brutal. Knowing they were all over her, she still showed up, ignoring the great safety risk.
What really ticked Alaric off was Tommy. He couldn't put his finger on it, but seeing Tommy's over-the-top concern for Stellan rubbed him the wrong way, maybe out of jealousy or insecurity.
Seeing Tommy protect her again today, his anger boiled over.
Alaric said, "I get why she did it. I know she feels responsible and wants to fix things fast. But I've told her over and over that I'd handle it. She didn't need to stress. Why doesn't she trust me? Even if she felt she had to go, she could've told me, and I'd have gone with her. I'd never let her get hurt. But now, something happened, and it wasn't me protecting her. I..."
Alaric suddenly clammed up. When he first saw the news, he was scared out of his mind. What if something had happened to Stellan?
After Marigold's death, Alaric had just lined up two witnesses for Stellan, and she had just given her statement. This had barely blown over, so why couldn't she learn from it? Why did she go rogue again?
Cormac got why Alaric was fuming. After letting him cool off a bit, he said, "I get it, man. You're scared something might happen to Galatea. But she feels guilty about your mom's death, so she wanted to handle the company's mess herself. She didn't want you stressing. You're still healing. She was worried about your health. You both care about each other, so just let it out."
Cormac went on, "Crash at my place tonight. You said you owed me a drink. I'll drink, and you can have water. Let's just chill and pretend this never happened."
Alaric didn't say a word, just closed his eyes and leaned back in the seat. He felt wiped out. He didn't want to blow up at Stellan. Maybe he'd been bottling it up too long, and seeing the news set him off.
Meanwhile, Stellan couldn't stop crying. She felt so useless, like everything she did lately was a screw-up.
"Stellan, don't be sad. Mr. Knight's just worried about you. Someone already came after you, and he's scared," Rowena tried to comfort her.
"I know. I'm just mad at myself. I..." Stellan felt so inadequate. "I haven't checked the comments, but it feels like those voices are drilling into my head. They're all blaming me, saying the safety incident at Nexus Innovations is my fault. They want me to apologize, or they'll keep boycotting Nexus Innovations."
"When I heard there were reporters outside the company today, I didn't think much. I just wanted to apologize and get it over with. I really didn't mean to distrust Alaric." Stellan's emotions got the best of her, and she sniffled before continuing, "His reaction to the treatment today was severe. Seeing him like that broke my heart. I just wanted to fix this mess quickly so he wouldn't worry and could focus on getting better. But I messed it up. I can't do anything right."
"Don't think that way, Stellan. You didn't do anything wrong. It's those bored netizens trying to stir things up. I've dealt with online trolls before. If you let them get to you, you'll only hurt yourself. But if you ignore them, they'll move on." Stellan said, "I know. If it were just about me, I wouldn't care. But this concerns Nexus Innovations, and I..."
Rowena cut her off, "Alright, alright, I get it. Let's not talk about it anymore. Cormac texted me. He said Mr. Knight will stay with him tonight. I'll crash at your place, and we can chat and talk about happy stuff. Let's forget about this, okay?" Stellan didn't respond, but she hoped it would be that way.
