Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 33 Mom, Just Be with Him
"I'm so sorry about that," Griffon said quickly as he saw the coffee spill on Galatea.
"It's okay." Galatea looked down at her clothes, then murmured, "I'll be right back from the restroom."
After a brief cleanup in the restroom, Galatea returned to their private booth, where Griffon apologized once again. He then added, "Galatea, I truly think that you should consider this carefully. It would be better for everyone if you leave. And when you come around, feel free to call me. Financial compensation for emotional damage can be arranged."
"Compensation? Sure, he may not share Alaric's DNA, but he sure was itching for her to hit the road."
"I'm afraid I'll have to dash your hopes there." Galatea grabbed her file folder and declared, "Griffon, I've got things to do, so I'll take my leave now."
Griffon remained silent.
After Galatea left, Griffon's gaze turned ice-cold in an instant, his grip on the coffee mug so tight it looked as though he might shatter it!
Back at home, Galatea retreated into her study and pored over Alaric's medical records with intense focus, her heart racing as she read them. The bullet had come so close to piercing his heart, and with dozens of injuries all over his body, it was nothing short of a miracle that he had survived.
Initially, she despised the man, but now, recognizing that all his current physical and mental scars were aftereffects of that injury, she couldn't help but find it pitiful. He was injured in the line of duty, despite everything was admirable. Lost in thought, she suddenly noticed a small figure by her side. Elisa pointed to the name scribbled on the file folder, attempting to decipher the letters.
"Alaric." Before Galatea could speak, Caspian interjected.
"Why's Galatea reading Daddy's file?" he wondered aloud.
"This isn't the jerk who slept with Mom and then bailed without taking any responsibility, is it?" Elisa blurted out angrily.
Galatea was utterly stunned and quickly tapped the girl's head, scolding, "Nonsense! When did I ever sleep with him?"
"That night, you didn't come home! I called you, and he picked up," Elisa explained.
"He said that mom fell asleep in his car, not that they slept together, Elisa. You must have misunderstood. He's not a jerk." Caspian hastily defended Alaric.
"Really? But when I went to see him, he didn't deny it either," Elisa rebutted.
"What on earth have you two been keeping from me?" Galatea was in the dark about all of this!
"Mom, I just wanted to help lighten the burden on you by finding a dependable and well-off guy," Elisa murmured, wilting under her mom's hard gaze. "I know you're busy. I'll hit the books now."
After Elisa darted out, Caspian asked with curiosity, "Mom, why are you looking at his medical record?"
"Because I'm his private physician now, I need to get familiar with his health status."
'A private doctor? That means they'll be seeing each other a lot!'
"Mom, I think there's been a big misunderstanding between you two. Alaric is a quite decent guy. He might seem tough, but he's really patient with those he cares about."
'Kind of like he has a split personality, mostly at night. Despite his own health issues, Alaric would patiently stay up all night, something Caspian was aware of.'
Galatea paused, "Harry, why does it seem like you know him so well? Have you met him?"
"No," Caspian suddenly felt guilty. "Just a hunch, mom. Can't you be with him? I'd love for him to be my dad, please!"
"Harry, what's gotten into you lately? It's like you're a different person."
"Is it?" Caspian feigned ignorance, "Elisa and I are on the same page. We both hate to see you so exhausted. Alaric's a former soldier who thrived in the business world after his service, which means he's capable and dependable. So, just give it a shot with him."
'Just how did that man completely win them over, that they would vouch for him?' she thought.
"Mom, just think about it, will you?" Caspian pleaded.
Galatea didn't respond, but then something clicked, and she blurted out, "Right, Harry, you claim to be a whiz at hacking, don't you? I need your expertise on something."
'A hacker? Does Harry have that skill? If he knew about hacking, could that expose who he really is?'
"Here's a portrait. I don't care how you do it, but I need you to find the person in this painting for me."
Galatea was pretty sure that Mrs. Marigold was a fabricated name to deceive her, and uncovering her real identity using the portrait would make things a lot easier. Caspian looked particularly uneasy as if he was preparing himself for an inevitable exposure.
"Why can't I find it? I had it on me for sure." Galatea searched all her pockets and her purse, but the portrait was nowhere to be found.
"Mom, if you can't find it, let's just talk about it later," Caspian feigned a yawn. "I'm sleepy. I'm going to bed now. You should get to bed early, too!"
After he ran out of the room, Caspian took a deep breath, still feeling the scare.
Galatea, realizing the portrait was lost, thought to herself, 'What rotten luck, now I'll have to find someone else to draw a new one.'
Since the portrait was gone, Galatea gave up looking for it and went back to reviewing Alaric's medical records. It felt like she had only made it halfway through when suddenly, the rest of the files seemed to have disappeared. "Silas, why is it that I only have half of Alaric's medical file that you gave me yesterday?" Early the next day, Galatea made a call to Silas Moon.
"How could that be? Mr. Knight's file hasn't been touched by anyone," Silas Moon was as surprised to hear it.
'That's strange, could it have been Griffon? He's an elder after all, why would he take half of Alaric's medical records?' "Are you missing half the file? Should I go to the hospital and get the original records?" Silas Moon asked, concerned. "There's no need, this half I have is sufficient for me to understand his condition for now. Don't trouble yourself, Silas." After hanging up, Galatea started to put together a health management plan, since Galen had given her time off.
It took Galatea the whole day, but she finally organized everything and then took the health management plan to Nexus Innovations.
