Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 294 The Pain During the Treatment
Alaric and Stellan were both ready. Caspian, Harry, and Elisa had already gone to boarding school. As planned, the kids would go to Marigold's place on weekends. Elisa was easy to deceive; a month of secret treatment should be no problem. "Everything's ready. Shall we start?" Stellan asked.
"Yes. I won't let work distract me this time. I'll fully cooperate with your treatment," Alaric replied.
"Alright, I'll start the injection now," Stellan said.
"Go ahead," Alaric replied.
The injection was almost as powerful as chemotherapy, and the human body would react strongly to it. She understood that her body would likely have a strong reaction to it. However, given the circumstances, she felt it was the best available option for her.
Within half an hour of the injection, Alaric began to react-dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and a feeling that his bones were aching all over. The pain was so intense that even breathing hurt.
"Is it very uncomfortable?" Stellan tightly grasped Alaric's hand. "The drug's reaction will go from weak to strong, then gradually weaken. Alaric, you have to endure it. It will get better soon, and the pain will lessen after a while."
"It's okay." Despite his discomfort, Alaric smiled at Stellan. "I've been through all kinds of harsh training. This is nothing. Don't worry, okay?"
Stellan knew Alaric was saying this to keep her from worrying. As a doctor, she was well aware of the drug's effects.
Stellan was well aware that many patients had sought death during treatment because they couldn't bear the pain.
She wanted to share Alaric's suffering, but she couldn't. All she could do was stay by his side.
Alaric had no appetite and couldn't eat at all. Forcing himself to taking some oatmeal only resulted in vomiting it all out. He had to be given nutritional injections.
The drug's effects were severe in the first two days, leaving Alaric in a daze. It wasn't until the third and fourth days that he felt slightly better. On the fifth day, he received the second injection, starting a vicious cycle of torment for his body.
Stellan had never felt time pass so slowly. It felt like centuries had passed, yet only half of the first treatment cycle was over.
Alaric visibly lost a lot of weight, and his overall condition deteriorated. He spent his days in a daze, too weak to speak.
A few days of treatment might be kept secret, but it couldn't be hidden for long.
One day, Marigold arrived at the company and was surprised to learn that Alaric had gone abroad for an inspection. "Are you saying Alaric has been gone for half a month?" Marigold asked in surprise.
Silas knew the truth but had been strictly instructed by Alaric not to tell anyone.
"Yes, Mrs. Knight," Silas replied.
"Alaric is increasingly ignoring me as his mother. He's been away from the company for half a month and didn't even tell me." Marigold called Alaric, but Stellan had just given him an injection half an hour ago, and he was experiencing the strongest reactions.
Alaric had a high fever the previous days, severe throat inflammation, and mouth ulcers, making it almost impossible for him to speak.
Seeing Marigold's call, Alaric turned off his phone. Realizing the phone had been turned off, Marigold got angry. "Alaric doesn't treat me as his mother anymore. He avoids me like I'm an enemy. It's all that bitch Stellan's fault!" Marigold then called Stellan. Seeing the call, Stellan was conflicted about whether to answer.
"Don't answer," Alaric murmured.
Hearing this, Stellan turned off her phone as well. She was focused on treating Alaric.
"This is outrageous! They both turned off their phones!" Marigold felt a pain in her chest from anger. She put down her phone furiously and asked Silas, "Did Alaric say how long he would be gone?" "Probably a month," Silas answered.
"A whole month?" Marigold grew more anxious. "Alaric is going away for so long and didn't even tell me. The company can't be without a leader for a day. He shouldn't take the company lightly just to spite me." Marigold implied that she should temporarily take over the company's operations in Alaric's absence.
Understanding Marigold's intention, Silas cautiously said, "Mrs. Knight, don't worry. Mr. Knight has arranged everything. During his absence, Mr. Nash will temporarily take over."
"Cormac?" Marigold was furious. Alaric didn't let her take over, and despite having many senior executives at Nexus Innovations, he handed the company to Cormac?
"Where is Cormac now?" Marigold learned that Cormac's office was on the top floor of the entertainment building, so she stormed over.
Just as Marigold stepped out of the top-floor elevator, she unexpectedly came face to face with Aurora, who was on her way to swimming lessons, carrying her swim bag. "Hello," Aurora greeted Marigold politely before entering the elevator.
Marigold watched the elevator doors close, still in shock. This was the top-floor office area. Where did this girl come from?
"Mrs. Knight, what brings you here?" Assistant Xavier was startled to see Marigold and quickly approached her respectfully.
"Who was that little girl? This is the top-floor office area. Where did she come from?" Marigold asked angrily.
"Mrs. Knight, that's Mr. Nash's family, Aurora. Mr. Nash and Aurora are currently living in the top-floor apartment."
'Cormac's family? The Nash family has long been ruined. How could Cormac have any relatives, let alone a little girl?' Marigold wondered.
"It's outrageous! This is an office area, a serious place, and he lets a girl live here? Ridiculous!" Marigold stormed into Cormac's office.
Seeing Marigold's demeanor, Cormac anticipated what she was going to say.
"Cormac, I've spoken to you nicely before, but you ignored me. Don't blame me for being blunt now," Marigold said straightforwardly. "Alaric let you join Nexus Innovations because of your friendship, to help you out. You can't be so inconsiderate, bringing a little girl to live at the company. Do you think Nexus Innovations is a charity? Alaric is kind, but you can't take advantage of his kindness. Alaric is not at the company now, and the person who should be in charge is me, not you."
If it were in the past, Cormac would have left without hesitation, but this was Alaric's request, and he intended to honor it.
"Mrs. Knight, since you're being direct, I'll be direct too," Cormac retorted. "You're just like my father-controlling, selfish, always thinking you're right while doing the wrong things. You're not helping Alaric; you're harming him. Alaric is an independent adult. From the military to Nexus Innovations, he's excelled in everything. You shouldn't question his decisions."
He went on, "Alaric is my boss now, and I'll only listen to him. He asked me to temporarily manage the company, and I'll do my job. If you're interfering with my work, I'll have to ask you to leave."
"Cormac, do you know who you're talking to? Do you know the name of the head of Nexus Innovations? You are simply..." Marigold started.
"Xavier!" Cormac called out. "Escort her out."
Xavier was stunned by the order. How could he dare?
"If you can't handle this, you can leave too!" Cormac reminded him.
Xavier had no choice but to step forward and lead Marigold away. "I apologize, Mrs. Knight, but I must ask you to leave."
