Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 280 He Still Did It
"What do you mean there's a chance Stellan could die in childbirth?" Marigold was momentarily stunned by the statement.
"She barely survived the last time she gave birth. If she gets pregnant again, it won't be any better. And she's incredibly fertile she got pregnant with triplets last time. She might have multiples again," Joe explained. "That's true, but with Alaric doting on her, if she gets pregnant, she'll definitely have a C-section. There's no chance of complications," Marigold said.
Marigold thought there might be a good idea, but it turned out to be a bunch of impractical suggestions. "Alright, enough. Stop bothering me with these useless ideas."
Joe could only keep silent.
Two days later, Cormac received another email from Ambrose: [Tomorrow is the deadline for submitting the design draft. You must get it by midnight tonight. Ensure that Nexus Innovations doesn't submit their design draft, so they lose the acquisition bid, and Aurora will come home safely.]
'Tomorrow is the deadline for submitting the design draft?! Today is the last day?!' Cormac pondered.
Alaric had appointed Cormac as the head of the jewelry company and the entertainment company. So, Silas had informed Cormac about the jewelry company acquisition.
Through his investigations over the past two days, Cormac learned that the only electronic version of the design draft was on a flash drive, which Alaric kept with him.
"Once we submit this design draft tomorrow, the acquisition of the jewelry company will be finalized," Alaric said. "Then you'll be busy."
Cormac's eyes were fixed on the flash drive in Alaric's hand. He was truly tormented by his conscience.
"Are you that confident about the acquisition?" Cormac asked. Alaric was always confident in his work, and years of experience had proven his capability.
"I never do things I'm not sure of," Alaric said. "Although I don't know what Todd's design draft looks like, I'm very satisfied with Nexus Innovations' work this time. No problem."
If Alaric weren't so confident, Cormac's guilt might have been lessened. Because if the design draft was submitted, Alaric would surely acquire the jewelry company; stealing the design draft would ruin Alaric's hard work. Given their current relationship, Cormac just wanted to part ways without owing each other anything. But this situation made it incredibly difficult for him.
Just as Alaric was about to say something, his phone rang. It was Marigold calling. He really didn't want to answer, but he knew if he didn't, Marigold might come over, and if she saw Cormac, it would be even more troublesome. "Hello, Mom," Alaric answered.
"I went to your office a few days ago and couldn't find you. I waited for you at home, but you didn't come. I know you hate it when I call during work, but I've held back for two days and can't anymore." Hearing Marigold's tone, Alaric felt a headache coming on, wondering what Marigold wanted now.
"What's wrong now?" Alaric said helplessly. "You get to see the kids every weekend. You don't like Galatea, and you both agreed not to see each other. What's the problem?"
"Yes, I'm somewhat satisfied with the arrangement with the kids and your wife. But then you brought Cormac back. Are you trying to drive me crazy?"
Alaric thought Marigold wouldn't know about this, but she already did.
Cormac's situation was already sensitive. If he heard anything, he might leave immediately.
Alaric had to get up and walk out while saying, "You don't need to worry about my health. I'm taking my medication on time. I'll go to the break room and take a picture of my meds for you." Alaric gave Cormac a look, signaling him to wait there.
When Alaric walked out with his phone, Cormac looked at the flash drive on the table. He had already prepared an identical one.
If Cormac switched them now, it would be easy.
But Cormac couldn't stop struggling internally. Switching them would lead to serious consequences. Yet if he didn't, Aurora would be in danger.
"Was Cormac just with you? Are you trying to spare his feelings?" Marigold knew what was going on from Alaric's evasive answers.
"Mom, I'm the CEO of Nexus Innovations now. I have absolute authority over personnel decisions. You're retired. Enjoy your retirement and stop meddling in company affairs. If you don't trust me, why did you hand over the company to me?" "Don't change the subject. I'm talking about Cormac. It's not just superstition; some things you have to believe. Cormac is unlucky. He didn't inherit the Nash family business, and the Nash family is ruined. Yet you keep him around and make him an executive at Nexus Innovations. Are you trying to bankrupt the company?" Marigold said.
"You're not just superstitious; you're obsessed. No matter what you think of Cormac, I brought him here, and I don't regret it. If you insist on interfering, you won't see the kids," Alaric said.
"Alaric, are you threatening me?!" Marigold retorted.
"Think what you want. I'm busy. Don't call again." Alaric hung up.
Cormac's hand trembled as he held the fake USB drive. He couldn't make up his mind. Then he heard footsteps; Alaric was coming back.
'If I don't get it by midnight, I won't see Aurora again.' ;That thought jolted Cormac. Without thinking, he placed the fake flash drive on the table and hid the real one in his pocket. When Alaric returned, Cormac couldn't hide his guilt. He couldn't look Alaric in the eye.
"Alright, Cormac, it's time. Go take care of Aurora." Alaric said as he put the fake flash drive in his drawer and locked it.
"Are you leaving on time now? You never used to leave on time." Cormac asked, trying to make conversation. If Alaric left now, he wouldn't discovere the fake flash drive.
"I have a family now. I can leave on time to pick up the kids." Alaric said.
"You've changed a lot since getting married." Cormac felt Alaric had changed significantly.
"More human?" Alaric joked.
Cormac didn't know how to respond. Seeing his silence, Alaric smiled and said, "Alright, let's go."
