Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 260 He Seemed Numb
Cormac believed losing everything with the Nash family was his life's lowest point, yet he hadn't known worse days lay ahead.
At that moment, everything became clear to Cormac. The so-called temporary driverand coincidence were all orchestrated by Richard to humiliate him in front of Rowena. To show Rowena how miserable her ex-boyfriend had become, to make her feel that breaking up with him was the right choice?
Cormac gripped the steering wheel so tightly that it seemed like he might tear it apart. He saw through human nature after the Nash bankruptcy.
Cormac didn't want to look at Rowena, or rather, he didn't dare to. He could only silently endure the humiliation and asked, "Where are you going?"
"To the Starry Sky Photography Studio in the suburbs. If you don't know the way, I can..." Richard said.
"I know." With that, Cormac started the car. It would take at least two hours to get there, and he had already calculated the time.
At this moment, Rowena couldn't say a word. She felt something pressing heavily on her chest, making it hard to breathe, and she hurriedly opened the window.
"What's wrong, Rowena? You don't look well. Didn't you rest well last night?" Richard asked, reaching out to touch her face with concern.
"Nothing." Rowena pushed Richard's hand away. When she looked at Cormac in the driver's seat, her heart ached, and she quickly averted her gaze.
"Rowena, remember when we were invited to Paris for Fashion Week, and you liked that wedding dress? I didn't want to buy it for you because a model had already worn it."
"So, I found the designer of that dress. I've already made an appointment with him. When we get married, he'll design your wedding dress."
Rowena didn't want to say anything or listen to Richard, so she replied perfunctorily, "It's still early for the wedding. No need to rush."
"Of course, we need to plan ahead. I've also picked out a venue for the wedding. Once we're done with this busy period, you can go check it out," Richard continued.
"I have a lot of engagements recently and no time. We'll talk about it later," Rowena replied.
"Rowena, you..." Richard started.
"I want to rest." Rowena interrupted him, her tone flustered.
"Alright, I won't say anything more. It will take two hours to get to the Starry Sky Photography Studio. You can take a nap." Richard pretended to be considerate.
At that moment, a red light stopped the car, and Cormac was suddenly pulled back ten years ago by the mention of weddings.
Cormac leaned against a campus tree as Rowena rested her head on his leg, flipping through a magazine.
"My idol is getting married today, Cormac. Look, she looks so beautiful in her wedding dress," Rowena shared with him.
Cormac had only glanced at it dismissively and said, "Just okay. And her husband is so much older, bald even. They don't match at all. Only you fans would blindly bless them."
"What do you know?" Rowena immediately sat up, unhappy. She explained, "They've been in love for ten years. Her husband has been writing songs for her in silence. To promote her album, he even mortgaged his house when he was just her boyfriend. Now, they've finally made it through ten years and are getting married. How romantic!"
"Yes, very romantic. I don't have the talent to write songs for you, but I can love you for ten years." Cormac smiled. "You say your idol looks beautiful in a wedding dress. You'd look even more beautiful. Let's go to a bridal shop someday, and you can try one on."
"Cormac, are you crazy? We're still students. It's too early to talk about marriage. Why would I go to a bridal shop now?" Rowena asked.
"It's not too early. It's just ten years from now," Cormac answered.
"Cormac!" Rowena pretended to be angry and hit him, and then they started playfully wrestling.
Thinking about it, Cormac couldn't help but smile. It felt like it was just yesterday.
The honk from the car behind brought him back to reality; he quickly started the car once the light turned green.
At that moment, Richard received a phone call, and Rowena hurriedly took out her phone to search for the Nash group.
She was abroad and occupied daily. Post-work, she'd directly head to bed, neglecting the news.
When she saw the search results, Rowena's whole body trembled. Ravenna and Orion were dead, Griffon was in prison, and the Nash family was completely bankrupt? Rowena browsed again and again, unable to believe it. How could this be?
After breaking up with Cormac, she hadn't heard from him. She thought he would inherit the family business, marry a woman of equal status, and live a glamorous life. How could this be?
Rowena looked at Cormac again, her heart aching so much she could hardly breathe, and tears streamed down her face.
Afraid they would see her, she quickly turned to look out the window, letting the wind dry her tears.
Finally, they arrived at the Starry Sky Photography Studio. As soon as the car stopped, a receptionist came to open the door for them. "Miss Blaire, you're finally here. The photographer is ready. Please follow me." "Rowena, time is tight. Go in and start the shoot. I'll join you in a bit," Richard said.
Rowena was warmly escorted inside. After she left, Richard pretended to say, "Mr. Nash, thank you for your hard work today. The shoot will take about three hours. After we're done, you can take us back to the hotel, and your work will be done for the day."
"No need." Cormac got out of the car and tossed the keys to him. "I have other things to do. Find someone else."
With that, Cormac started to walk away, but Richard said, "But we agreed you'd work the whole day. If you leave now, I might not be able to pay you..."
"I don't want the money. Consider this a free ride." Cormac replied.
"But we're in the suburbs. If you leave, where will I find another driver?" Richard asked.
"Mr. Richard, aren't you full of energy? Can't you drive yourself?" Cormac retorted.
"Cormac, what kind of attitude is this? I paid you to work but not to talk back to me," Richard scolded.
Since Richard had said that, Cormac decided not to hold back. "Richard, what's the point of this? Humiliating Rowena's ex-boyfriend in front of her makes you feel powerful? Makes you look capable?" "Ex-boyfriend? You mean you are..."
"Stop pretending!" Cormac angrily interrupted Richard. "Would you have done this if you hadn't investigated?" Cormac retorted.
"Fine, Cormac. Since you put it that way, I'll be direct. I know about your past relationship. That's why I don't trust you. You know our status now. Rowena is out of your league, and she has a boyfriend. I'm just reminding you to stay away from her and not to get close to her again." Richard warned.
"Your status? What status? So noble?" Cormac laughed contemptuously. "When I was mingling with the elite, you were nowhere to be found. Don't play this game with me! You said it yourself, I'm just her ex. If we had a chance, we wouldn't have broken up. I know my place. You don't need to use such despicable means to test me!"
"I'm a mess now. Do whatever you want with me; I don't care. But have you thought about her feelings? You're despicable. I won't bother Rowena, and I don't want to see you again!" Cormac said. With that, he turned and walked away. Richard, feeling particularly annoyed after being rebuked, muttered, "Just a fallen man, acting all high and mighty!"
Cormac walked out of the photography studio, his heart filled with indescribable feelings. Pain? He seemed numb to it. Humiliation? Since losing everything, he had faced plenty of that.
In the suburbs, the nearest bus stop was a long walk away. Cormac walked step by step, his heart breaking bit by bit.
He didn't know how long he had been walking when someone suddenly called out to him from behind. He turned around, and it was Rowena.
