Chapter 1657:

? ? ? ? ?

"Nicole, Brett is dead."

The news hit Nicole like a bolt of lightning, her mind spinning from the sudden shock.

Brett was supposed to have already left the country with Callie, following his elaborate plan. How could everything have gone so wrong so quickly?

Nicole felt a wave of unease and asked, “What about Callie? How is she?”

Ethel's voice softened, filled with concern.

“Callie is safe for now, but she is very traumatized. She is in the hospital, but she hasn't said a word since the incident. “She remains silent no matter what we ask her.”

Nicole's thoughts were racing, trying to grasp the gravity of the situation. She had thought it best to get Brett and Callie away, and she hadn't kept that from Ethel.

Ethel continued: “Brett was ready to leave, but at the last minute he decided to take back the money Jamie had given him. He had buried it in a place only he knew about. He took Callie with him, left her in the car, but never returned. Callie went to look for him and found his brutalized body. The scene was so horrific it left her speechless.”

Ethel didn't mention the full horror. Brett had been stabbed more than sixty times, his body mutilated and his face unrecognizable from the wounds.

It was a miracle that Callie hadn't lost her mind after witnessing such a terrible scene.

“Can you arrange for me to see Callie?” Nicole asked.

Ethel had wondered the same thing.

No one had been able to get Callie to talk and time was running out to find the author.

If Nicole could get Callie to talk, it would be a big step forward.

When Nicole ended the call, Jarrod looked at her with concern.

"What's going on?"

Nicole didn't hide it from Jarrod and gave him a brief account of the situation. This could implicate Jamie, and Jarrod needed to know the dangers that Jamie or the mastermind behind her represented.

Jarrod frowned as he listened. “Try not to worry too much. Nothing is confirmed yet, but your safety is crucial for the next few days. “I’ll be increasing security at Austin’s school and assigning four bodyguards to be with you at all times.”

To calm Nicole's doubts, Jarrod added: "You're carrying our child, so this protects the baby too."

Nicole didn't object this time. Jarrod was right. She needed to take precautions until everything was resolved.

The bodyguards Jarrod had arranged were the best around. It saved him from having to find his own security team, which might not be reliable.

Even Brett, his father's confidant, had betrayed them. There was no room for blind faith anymore.

“Let me take you,” Jarrod said, realizing that Nicole had not rejected his suggestion. I accompanied her to the hospital.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Nicole followed Ethel into Callie's living room.

As the door opened, they saw a small figure curled up on the bed. Callie sat with her knees drawn up under her chin and her face buried in her arms.

In the last few days she had lost an astonishing amount of weight and her delicate figure was provoking Nicole's emotions.

Nicole came closer, her voice soft. “Callie.”
