Chapter 1645:

? ? ? ? ?

Nicole, as she had done the day before, stayed by Rhett's side while he tied, cleaning up afterward.

"Mr. Bates, are you experiencing any other symptoms besides fever?" Nicole asked, her concern evident.

Rhett shook his head, saying, "So far, just the fever is down."

Nicole felt a slight relief, but she was still worried. In fact, even a slight fever was a cause for concern.

Seeing Nicole's worried expression, Rhett reassured her with a smile, "Miss Lawrence, please don't worry. I have accepted whatever fate has in store for me. No matter what happens, it is my fate. Don't blame yourself."

However, the more Rhett expressed this sentiment, the more Nicole's guilt weighed on her. She uttered in a low voice.

“Mr. Bates, please refrain from comforting me. I have a deep sense of responsibility. If I had not suddenly fallen ill, you would not have accompanied me to the hospital, and you would not have encountered that altercation with the intoxicated man. Let us simply hope for the best outcome. Whatever happens, I am in your debt. If you ever need help in the future, I will spare no effort.”

Rhett commented, “It seems that, despite my efforts to persuade you otherwise, you will continue to harbor that sense of responsibility.”

His joking tone eased Nicole's apprehension about the engagement. She agreed. “Definitely!”

At that moment Nicole's phone range. It was an unknown number.

As Nicole went to answer the call, she was met with silence on the other end.

Nicole asked, “Hello, who is it?”

Nicole was speechless. “If you remain silent, I will end the call.”

As Nicole was about to hang up the call, a voice broke the silence. “Nicole.”

Nicole jumped. She recognized the voice instantly: it was Callie.

It had been days since Ethel mentioned that Callie's family had holed up at home, showing no signs of activity.

And Brett hadn't made a single appearance. Apparently, his previous actions had put him on guard. Brett had become wary.

Nicole realized that worrying would do no good. If Brett continued to be elusive, they would have no way of tracking him down.

However, Callie's unexpected call sparked a renewed sense of hope in Nicole. She asked cautiously, "Is that you, Callie?"

"Yes, Nicole, it's me."

Nicole asked, “What's wrong?”

Callie lapses into silence again.

Unfazed, Nicole asked, “Do you need my help?”

After a pause, Callie replied, "No."

“So…” Before Nicole could finish her thought, Callie chimed in again. “Nicole, my… My father is planning to take me away.”

Nicole was speechless. It seemed like Brett was making preparations to escape, unable to bear to leave Callie behind, so he decided to take her with him.

Nicole asked, “Can I have a chance to meet your father?”
