Chapter 1635:
? ? ? ? ?
Jarrod's expression soured, but Hallie continued steadily, lamenting, "I met Doreen today. She's visibly haggard and completely exhausted. The torment she's enduring and the bruises on her… It's unbearable. After all she's hardened, how can she harden any more?"
Hallie wiped away her tears, genuinely distressed by her daughter's situation. This time she approached the situation more tactfully, avoiding mention of Doreen's transgressions and emphasizing her suffering, in the hope of awakening Jarrod's compassion.
With Jarrod healing from his injuries from the incident, Hallie had berated Doreen for her failure, which resulted in Jarrod being injured instead of Nicole being harmed.
Now, with Jarrod hospitalized and Doreen facing serious charges, the situation had worsened considerably.
If Jarrod wrote a letter of pardon, attributing the incident to an unintentional event, there was a chance that Doreen might receive a suspended sentence rather than prison. In this way, Doreen could avoid the order of imprisonment.
However, Nicole's testimony influenced the severity of the charges against Doreen, resulting in a harsher sentence.
After seeking legal advice, it became clear that Doreen could face several years of imprisonment, potentially five to ten.
Faced with this dire situation, both Doreen and Hallie harbored resentment towards Nicole for her situation.
Jarrod replied calmly, “If you and Doreen had heeded my warnings, this tragedy would have been avoided. I am unable to help Doreen now. “Hallie, you must explore alternative avenues.”
Jarrod coldly refused. Hallie insisted relentlessly, as Jarrod remained her only beacon of hope. Without his help, Doreen's doom was inevitable.
«Jarrod, I acknowledge my earlier harshness and the distress it caused. Please forgive me. Please understand Doreen's irreplaceable value as my only beloved daughter.
If she were impressed, I'm afraid I would be completely lost. The mere thought of something bad happening to her is unbearable… Hallie sobbed sadly.
Jarrod, despite your anger, remember our family bond. The unfortunate loss of your parents in your youth weighed heavily on all of us.
Your mother entrusted me with your well-being, and although my support was modest, the weight of guilt has never left me.
Thanks to your efforts, our circumstances have improved, but just as we begin to find solace, the specter of imprisonment looms over my only daughter. How can I bear this?
“Jarrod, don't you dare forget how I supported you before. You have no idea what my husband put me through when I lent you that money. “He was still complaining about it on his deathbed.”
Hallie kept talking, but Jarrod found her words irritating. He had never put family loyalty first, and it wasn't like if Hallie had given him the money out of pure kindness.
Jarrod raised an eyebrow at Hallie. “There's something I've been keeping hidden. Years ago, my mother loaned you two million dollars. After she died, you took advantage of my grief during your visit, pretending to offer comfort while secretly destroying evidence of the debt.”
Hallie's eyes widened in shock. She had never imagined that Jarrod knew of her actions. An admission of guilt was inconceivable, prompting her to vehemently deny his accusation. “Jarrod, are you kidding? You're surely wrong. Even if I’m not wealthy, I would never resort to such underhanded tactics.”
Jarrod's expression darkened at her denial.
