Chapter 1540:
? ? ? ? ?
Only the chief possessed the pill, which was rumored to have miraculous properties. It could not resurrect the dead, but it could prolong a life that was hanging by a thread. Given Emerie's condition, the pill could prolong its life by several more hours, enough time for a possible rescue.
However, when Emerie gestured with that intense look in her eyes, the boss realized that she could not allow Emerie to survive. It was clear to her that Emerie had discovered her secret and therefore Emerie had to be silenced.
Under Emerie's condemning gaze, the chief announced, "The holy witch has succumbed to the wounds inflicted by an evil spirit's weapon. Take her away immediately for treatment."
Four witches came forward, snatched Emerie from Nicole's hands, and hurried her away. Nicole, unsure of their true intentions, felt the urge to follow them, but found herself blocked by the chief's firm order.
“You demoness, do you really think you can run away?” the boss sneered.
The chief ordered the other witches: “Escort this demoness. I will call upon the Holy Spirit to cleanse this corrupted soul and expose the evil that haunts her.” The witches began to drag Nicole towards the platform.
Nicole resisted, shouting at the witches: “Don't you see what's happening? Look at Emerie! Don't listen to your boss. "She's lying to you."
However, her pleas fell on deaf ears as the witches, imbued with unwavering loyalty, ignored her cries. Nicole was forcibly placed at the back of the lotus altar, her back to Roscoe.
The boss spent no time and raised his torch to eliminate Nicole without delay. However, she made a spectacle of it, brandishing the torch and proudly declaring, “Drive out the evil spirit and accumulate great virtue!”
Below, the witches imitated their boss loudly, like puppets with no thoughts of their own.
The chief was pleased. This was the outcome she wanted, with devoted followers who would help perpetuate the witch clan.
Originally, the boss had placed her hopes on Emerie to take over her responsibilities eventually. However, it was now apparent that Emerie's faith was not deep enough. Fortunately, Emerie would not do it with her severe injuries. Emerie had committed suicide.
This was a relief to the boss. After all, it saved her from having to intervene.
Just as the boss was about to lower the torch onto the lotus platform, a sudden “whoosh” broke the silence.
An arrow pierced the air. It hit the chief's shoulder and blood began to stain his tunic.
The assembled witches gaped in shock as their chief staggered to the spot, their complexion pale.
Before anyone could understand what was happening, another arrow hit the chief's knee.
"The boss screamed in pain and fell to the ground.
The frightened witches searched frantically for the attacker. They soon saw an elderly man dressed in gray perched on a tree branch, his homemade bow aimed at the chief. His voice, though aged, rang out loud as he cried out, “Old hag, give me back my son’s life.”
The old man loosed another arrow, hitting the chief square in the heart. The chief's hand shook as he fell forward, the torch setting his robes alight.
The boss weakly reached for a bottle of life-prolonging pills strapped to her waist. Her fingers trembled as she managed to open the bottle and take out the pills.
Just as he was about to stuff them into his mouth, a flying kick sent the pills scattering across the floor.
