Chapter 1459:

? ? ? ? ?

Nicole vaguely remembered that Brett's youngest daughter had health problems, although the exact relief eluded her. She knew that the treatments were expensive. Brett had spent most of his income on his daughter's medical bills, apart from buying a modest house.

Although Nicole's father had offered financial help, Brett, a proud man, refused anything he didn't earn from his work. He insisted that his salary was enough to cover his daughter's needs.

So, given their close bond, it was strange that Brett hadn't attended his father's funeral. Everyone else had come, even those who only knew his father in passing, like the occasional employees. Brett's absence seemed like a deliberate omission.

After the turmoil in the Lawrence family, Brett had completely disappeared from Nicole's life. At the time, Nicole was too consumed by her own grief to notice his disappearance. Now, the more she thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed.

Nicole turned to Ethel with anxious eyes. “I can't pinpoint where Brett is right now, but I remember the address of his house.”

Ethel's response was immediate and decisive. "Give it to me. I'll check after work."

Officially tracing Brett's whereabouts would have required a mountain of paperwork, a slow and cumbersome process, especially for an old case. Having Nicole give the address directly was a quicker and more efficient route. Plus, investigating after hours meant there was no bureaucratic interference.

Nicole scribbled the address on a piece of paper and hesitated before handing it over. “Can I come with you?”

Nicole needed to know if there were hidden facets to her father's death. Brett certainly had some answers, and a chilling suspicion gnawed at her. What if her father's death hadn't been a suicide?

Ethel noticed the concern in Nicole's eyes. "Miss Lawrence, this isn't just about finding Brett. It could be dangerous."

Nicole squared her shoulders, her resolve steely. “I can handle it. I'll follow you, I promise. “I won’t get in your way.”

Ethel studied Nicole for a moment, weighing the risks. She thought better of it and finally agreed. “Okay, but you have to do exactly as I tell you. “I know you’re older, but experience counts here.”

Nicole seriously agreed. “I understand. “I’ll do whatever you tell me.”

“Fine,” Ethel replied, looking at her watch. “We don't have much time. His father's case was closed as a suicide, and the financial fraud case linked to him is almost out of his record retention period. If we don’t find what we need by the end of the year, the evidence will be destroyed.”

In the fraud case, surveillance footage had been preserved, but with the case closed, those records were on loan. Without them, convicting anyone would be nearly impossible.

Nicole understood the urgency. “I get it.”

Ethel changed the subject. “Have you come today about the Hampton young lady?”

Nicole agreed. "Forks."
