Chapter 1410:
? ? ? ? ?
Jarrod's breathing became heavier as he approached Nicole's seductive figure on the bed. His broad hand slid beneath the fine silk of her nightgown, pressing against her warm skin, kneading it gently.
The silent room was filled with the faint sounds of his harsh breathing.
This continued for a long time until one last ragged breath escaped his lips.
Then the shaking stopped.
Jarrod narrowed his eyes and stood still for a moment. He withdrew his hand, grabbed some tissues from the bedside table, and wiped himself casually.
Afterwards, he got up and went to the bathroom to take a cold shower.
Coming out of the bathroom, still naked, Jarrod looked at the woman still sleeping in the bed and sighed. I have decided not to spend the night there. It would be too complicated.
I opened the door and left the room.
In bed, Nicole was sleeping restlessly. Her brows were furrowed and her legs were drawn up, a sign of deep insecurity.
Nicole had been insecure for many years.
Before, with her parents nearby, she could sleep peacefully even on the small, uncomfortable cot in a hospital room.
But since his father's death, quiet nights had been rare.
Tonight she dreamed about her father again. Her dream went back to when she was a child and he would take her to the countryside for a charity event.
In her dream, Nicole found herself walking through endless farmland, while her father explained to her the different crops and their uses. I have explained to her how these plants would end up on her table.
Tired of walking, little Nicole rode on her father's back.
Listening to his explanations, she asked innocently: “Dad, why don't farmers eat meat? It's filling and delicious. Why don’t they do it?”
Her father paused, then laughed out loud at her naive question.
That innocence was typical of a girl her age.
At five years old, little Nicole could not understand the scarcity of meat and its value.
Growing up in the city with the well-off Lawrence family, Nicole had always been well-fed, with even the household staff enjoying large meals.
That's why little Nicole found it difficult to understand why farmers lived differently.
Her father adapted his explanation to her young mind. “Does my little Nicole like to eat meat?”
“Yes, I like meat,” little Nicole replied in her childish tone. The meat was delicious, fragrant and tender, irresistible to anyone.
His father continued: “The meat you like, including beef, pork and lamb, comes from animals raised by those farmers.
Instead of eating them, farmers sell them to support their families. Many farmers have not had the opportunity to receive training, which limits their employment options to physically demanding jobs.
It's not that they don't like meat, but the sale of a pig or a sheep could cover their family's annual expenses, including their children's schooling.
They sacrifice their desires, hoping that their hard work will offer their children a chance to escape poverty.
