Love Began with the First Meeting -
Chapter 1340 Extra Story 95 Of Edgar No Personal Consideration
She thought Edgar would hold her tightly in his arms. However, he didn't. He pulled her away from him immediately and then said in an apathetic voice, "Stand still!" Pouting, Maggie stood properly against her will. Then she looked around in hope of being seen by any bystanders. If that was the case, what had been said in the hot post on the college forum would be proven correct, and those thirsty women who were already casting greedy eyes at Edgar might step back for fear of her. Unfortunately, things were not going as she hoped. Edgar had once been a scout and he was good at surveillance. Once he had told her to come here, he must have scouted the place and made sure that nobody would appear while they were here. Therefore, she felt disappointed when these thoughts came to her mind.
"It's late. Why did you ask me to come here?" she asked crossly.
An almost invisible smile played at the corners of his mouth. However, Maggie didn't notice his smile due to the darkness of the night and her insufficient night vision. "What about your preparations for the examination?" he asked in an emotionless voice.
"I don't need to prepare!" she said with a sense of self-assurance. Rather than bragging, she was telling the truth in her answer. She had never paid overly much attention to her school work. She had studied while playing since her childhood. She always learned more quickly than others.
When he saw the self-conceit on her face, his smile deepened and spread across his face. He said, "Hmm. If you win the first place in the examination, I will take you to Dragon Island for the following three days' vacation."
"Hmm... What?" Maggie first nodded reflexively, but then as she processed Edgar's words, she opened her eyes wide and glared at him, not believing what she had just heard. "What did you say just now?"
Edgar's brows furrowed slightly and his eyes seemed to sparkle. As the smile on his lips became a grin, he repeated, "If you're able to win the first place this time, then I will take you to Dragon Island. Since I have to go there, I can take you there with me." Maggie's eyes glittered with an almost childlike excitement in the dark night. After swallowing to wet her suddenly dry mouth, she asked once again for confirmation, "Really?"
With a nod, Edgar said, "I will be taking part in the grading of your papers this time as a special supervisor."
"Then?" she asked, instantly suspicious.
"I mean that I will be stricter on you, without any personal consideration," he said in a calm voice.
Pursing her lips and raising her chin slightly, Maggie said, "Hah! I don't need your special care. Let's wait and see!"
"Okay," he said. Then he turned around and walked away while saying, "All right. The lights will be out in ten minutes. You may go back now."
"Yes, sir!" Maggie said, standing to attention and giving Edgar a smart salute. Grinning, she added, "Uncle Three, you'd better not go back on your word." She bit her lower lip and smiled. Then she ran back happily.
Hearing what she had just said, Edgar stopped in his tracks. He turned his head back and looked at her fading back into the darkness. The barely contained smile on his lips reached up to the corners of his eyes in a wide expression of joy. He said to her pensively in his mind, 'Little girl, it will not be easy for you to stand by my side. If you don't work hard enough, I can do nothing but fall along with you. I don't think you want such a result.'
Monica and Benjamin had never seen Maggie study so hard before. Whining, they complained that Maggie would leave them far behind if she carried on in this way. Maggie didn't explain why she did this. She only responded with a mysterious smile.
She had an excellent academic record, but she was only one of the best students. She could not ensure that she would win the first place easily. It was not like winking! Every undergraduate in the college, especially those who majored in new types of missile study, was an outstanding student. She'd never worked very hard at school. It was beyond question for her to win one of the top five places, but she might need some luck to win the first place. Therefore, in order to travel together with Edgar on the three days' vacation, which would serve as a period of adjustment after the examination, she had to exert herself to the utmost and do her best. The harder she worked, the higher the probability of winning the first place she would have.
Just as Edgar said, he would not give her a higher score due to any personal considerations. Instead, he would be stricter with her than with others.
Every student worked hard in the days leading up to the examination, though they talked about Edgar's marriage occasionally when taking a break. On the examination day, the atmosphere in the whole college was extremely tense, as if they were preparing for a war. Maggie frequently appeared at the college library to review her lessons before the examination, drawing the attention from not only her peer students but also the college staff. Somebody even said jokingly that the other students who were hopeful of winning the first place must have felt even more pressure.
Edgar seldom saw Maggie except during his classes. As an aggressively motivated person, Maggie didn't want to lose out on the final prize because of small gains, such as meeting Edgar for a few stolen moments somewhere.
Perhaps it was because Maggie had tried her very best that the examination seemed to be more stressful. After handing in the examination papers for the last course, Benjamin and Monica waited for Maggie in the corridor. It was not until the last bell had rung that they saw Maggie walk out of the examination room.
"How do you feel?" Benjamin asked curiously, but also concerned about his friend.
Maggie shook her head and shrugged sulkily. She didn't look as self-confident as usual. In a low voice, she said, "The questions were too flexible this time. Plus there was no single standard..." Gnawing at her lips slightly, she continued, "It is impossible to predict the final result." Hearing her answer, Monica and Benjamin looked at each other at the same time. In the end, they looked at Maggie and asked, "Now that the examination is over... tell us honestly. Why did you work so hard this time?"
Maggie looked up at her two bosom friends. Finally, she shook her head, sighed and turned around while saying, "I can't tell you."
"Huh!" Monica said, showing the whites of her eyes. "I know the reason must have something to do with Captain Edgar."
Maggie briefly turned her head to face them, neither admitting nor denying anything.
"Maggie, I wish I could curse you into failing this time," Monica said with a bitter poisoned tongue.
"Huh! Don't come and cry in front of us when the result comes out tomorrow."☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐☐
