Malum’s POV

“Sir? We caught sight of him today. We can go forward with the attack any time.” I nodded and looked at the messenger. Today was not a good day.

“Do you know what today is?” My voice was calm, but I wasn’t.

“It’s the first of July sir,” he responded in his boring drone like voice. Most of the experiments voices were like that. Different pitches of course, but it is the same drone like voice in the end. It’s a result of their soullessness. There are a few exceptions of course. They’re usually the ones who die quicker.

“Exactly, the first of July.” I turned away from him and walked towards my wall of weapons. I took off my third favorite g*n and spun around. I aimed towards his head and he froze. I wouldn’t say it was in was in fear, more in shock. I lowered the g*n and shot his arm. He let out a yell and clasped his arm where I shot him. “We leave at midnight. Alert the others.” He nodded and scurried out of the room like the good little b***h he is.

I put the g*n back on the wall and sit down. It’s her birthday today. Not a day I like to remember because. . . I sigh. As soon as the clock strikes midnight, it would be the anniversary of her death.

“Mal, what are you doing?” Getdi giggled as I took her through the woods, my hands covering her eyes.

“You’ll see.” I had a surprise for her birthday. It was really simple but I figured she would enjoy it.

“You know I don’t like to celebrate my birthday.” Of course I knew that. On her birthday a few years ago her parents got rid of everything they thought was making her spoiled. They threw out basically everything decorating her room, her hair dye, and they even went as far as taking her pet cat away from her for a month. Aiden made her get rid of the cat eventually. She has hated birthdays ever since.

“It’s your birthday? I had no idea,” I said with sarcasm lacing my voice.

“Shut up you i***t and tell me where you are taking me.”

“No can do.”

At one point she almost tripped over her own feet and fell back into my chest. My hands fell away from her eyes, revealing her beautiful hazel eyes. I leaned down and gently pushed my lips against hers. Every time I kissed her I could feel this little scar that she has on her lower l*p. She has had the scar since she was a little girl, as long as I could remember actually.

I pushed myself back and noticed little lights starting to float around us. They flickered in and out and I smiled. I looked back to Getdi. “We’re here.” She looked around and smiled as she saw all of the fireflies.

“Malum-“

“Don’t say anything,” I interrupted her. I moved behind her and wrapped my arms around her waist, leaning my chin onto her shoulder. I turned my head towards her cheek and kissed her cheek gently. “Just enjoy,” I whisper.

“It’s so beautiful Mal. Thank you.”

“If you want, you don’t have to think of this as a birthday present. Think of this as an ‘I love you’ present.” She nodded as she stared at all of the fireflies around us. Sometimes they would go so high you would think they are joining the stars.

“Follow me,” I said after a while and I took her hand. I made her stand in the middle of the clearing where there were no leaves above us. I walked behind a tree and came back out, an object in my hands.

“Is that-“

“A lantern. I remember one time you told me you watched a movie with a lantern festival in it. You said you always wanted to go to the lantern festival. It’s been your wish ever since then. Now, I couldn’t find any nearby lantern festivals but I did find a place that sold them. I thought something is better than nothing.”

“It is so much better. Thank you.” She blushed. “Again.” I chuckled and pulled out a lighter. I handed the lighter to her. She lit the round thing at the bottom and then put her hands near mine, pushing it off into the dark sky. It was almost midnight but I planned on staying out here with her until her birthday was over.

“Well isn’t this sweet.” I stiffened and so did Getdi. I saw the terrified look on her face and pushed her behind me. “Now I would appreciate it if you would hand the b***h over to me.”

“Aiden,” I growled. He was standing on the other side of the clearing. His semi long blond ginger hair tied back. He had two men with him with him but I could only smell them. He must have told them he could handle this. “Go back to where you came from before I rip you to shreds.” He chuckled.

“I can’t do that. You see, the Alpha and Luna would really like their daughter back home. You have been blamed for her kidnapping-“

“It wasn’t k********g!” I looked to Getdi who had stepped out from behind me. She was standing straight but I could still see her slightly shaking. “We both left! Together!”

“Ahhh, the pack doesn’t have to know that baby girl.” I growled at him. “Now, come over here. It’s time that we go home. If you come peacefully, I’ll even leave Malum’s body in one piece.” I reached my hand out and entwined my fingers with hers.

“I’ll kill you before she ever goes back with you.”

He g*****d in annoyance. “You know, you are always in the way. I think it is time that you leave the scene.” Before I could even respond he pulled out a g*n and a shot echoed the clearing.

Still. Everything was completely still. Not even the fireflies blinked anymore. I looked down to see Getdi in front of me. She ran in front of me. The stillness came crashing down around me. I screamed for her.

She fell back against my chest and I cradled her as we both fell to the ground. “Mal,” she whispered and coughed.

“It’s going to be okay,” I told her. “You’ll be okay.”

“Getdi,” I heard Aiden whisper. I’ll f*****g kill him. A cough brought my eyes back to my mate.

“Mal, I l-love yo-you.”

“I love you too but please. . . Please don’t talk like this is goodbye.” She smiled and then her eyes fluttered close. “Getdi? Open your eyes. . . Getdi? Please open your eyes!” I felt tears fall down my cheeks.

“12am, exactly, of July second. I’ll go back to the pack. You’ll be hunted down and charged with the death of the Alpha’s daughter.” I was too numb to pay attention to his words. “I’ll see you later Malum. You’ll join her, don’t worry.”

He left and I picked up her body, my hands going to her blue hair. I cradled her against my chest, not caring that her b***d was staining my shirt.

“I love you Getdi.”

Today was really not a good day.
