His Unwanted Wife Again -
Chapter Eight
Unedited
Holy crap. She felt like her lungs had a slow leak. She couldn't hold any air in. Nathan was there? She was feeling so many mixed emotions. She was happy, excited, nervous, and more than any other emotion she was scared. "He's inside, talking to Jacob," Clarissa adds. Noticing Sabrina's eyes searching the faces around her.
"He just got here, about 15 minutes ago. He was actually trying to avoid you."
"He didn't come to his nephew's birthday party because he was trying to avoid me?" She thought that he probably had to work, opening a brand new division of his company an all.
"I let him know that I invited you. He understood. The kids have been begging him constantly to see you, just as much as they do Jacob and me."
"Mommmm!" Alyssa hollers at her mother like she was taking too long.
Maybe she should just go home. But the children will be so disappointed. It would hurt them if she just left. She definitely lost her appetite now though
She wanted to talk to Nathan, she was just nervous. What would he say? What would he do?"
"Coming!" Clarissa hollers back. "Come on...You can take the kids in one of their rooms. She turns to Sabrina.
They ended up in Alyssa's room. As she entered the house the stairs were to the right as soon as you entered the door, and Alyssa's room is the first at the top of the stairs. So on her way up, there wasn't a chance she could run into Nathan. She wanted to see him so badly but something told her she didn't know what she was asking for. She was so conflicted with her feelings because she didn't care. She wanted to see him.
Alyssa began showing her, her art projects while Emmie jumped on the bed.
"I wanna show you some of mine too," Dylan says rushing out the room and bumping straight into Nathan. He had just reached the top of the stairs.
"Hey D." D, is the nickname the guys use for him. "Where are you going so fast?" Nathan rubs the boy's head.
"I want to show Auntie Sabrina something I drew."
Nathan stills, his smile fades, and his jaw clenches down. He glances straight up into the open door of Alyssa's room into Sabrina's sad eyes
It had been such a long time since she's seen him she had to take a second to take him in.
He was wearing a black suit like he had just come from work, and he began growing the facial hair around his mouth. His hair was as it always was, and even the ruby ring he wore on his right hand was still there. His wedding ring was gone though. Of course, it was. He hated her. It was written all over his face how much he hated her.
"Nathan." She mumbles.
He says nothing. His phone rings. He doesn't immediately answer it. It was like he was stuck.
"Catch me..." Emmie giggles and jumps into Sabrina's arms. It breaks their moment.
She catches Emmie and releases a breath she hadn't realized she was holding in. She then realized that Alyssa was very quietly watching the moment she just shared with Nathan. When she looks back at the door, he was gone. "Is it true you cheated on uncle Nathan?"
Sabrina blew out another breath. Of course, they knew something. She almost hoped that her mom had made up some story as to why she isn't around anymore."
"No." She says as firmly and seriously as she can.
"Why is grandma telling everyone that?" Alyssa asks.
Of course, Vivian would turn on her. She was only nice because Sabrina was part of the family. Now she could probably kick rocks. She wouldn't be the womb barring her grandchildren anymore. She constantly reminded Sabrina of how much she couldn't wait to have a grandchild from Nathan. It was one of the reasons she put so much pressure on herself.
"Because your grandmother hasn't heard my side of the story."
Emmie plays with her hair and Dylan has yet to return with a binder.
"What's your side?"
"My side...." How could she tell this 12-year old that her uncle came on to her? "My side is... complicated. It wasn't what it looked like."
Dylan comes running back into the room. "I found it! Finally" He sounded exhausted and frustrated.
"Let me see." She focuses her attention on Dylan's drawing."
"It's beautiful." He drew her. It was really good.
"You're very artistic"
He smiles.
Suddenly, something dawned on her. She squeezes her eyes shut. "Alyssa."
"Yeah." She looks up from looking at her own art projects.
"If your boyfriend gives you the excuse I just gave you, he's lying. Okay." She realized how crazy it sounded. She would have thought she was lying. "Okay." She nods obediently.
"Look who's up." Clarissa enters the room with Matthew in her hands.
"The birthday boy!" Sabrina shouts Excitedly. She gentle puts Emmie down and reaches for him.
She squeezes and kisses all the while thinking about Nathan probably being down the hall.
After spending some time with them, she needed to leave. She was going to miss her flight back home if she didn't. After breaking their little hearts, Clarissa took them back to what remained of their party.
Sabrina couldn't stop thinking about the chance she had to speak with Nathan. She knew he was somewhere in one of these rooms. Instead of following Clarissa and the children downstairs, with her ears on alert, she began slowing walking the hallway.
She stops three doors down to one of Clarissa and Jacobs's guest bedrooms when she hears talking. Then she hears the hum that's her husband's voice.
Her stomach churned. She was going to do this. She was going to talk to him. She had to. She at least needed to make him hear her side of the story. She puts her ear by the door to make sure she was hearing correctly. She was definitely hearing voices.
Nathan was on a conference call. She knew because he was on them often. Those things could take hours by the time everyone finished what they had to say. Nathan used to put the phone on mute and spent his time on her body until he needed to respond again.
She took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock. Should she knock? Maybe he wouldn't let her in. She couldn't take the chance of him not letting her defend her self again. She felt like he was going to somehow slip away again. She puts her hand on the doorknob and twists it checking to see if it was open. It was. She blows out a breath again, nerves getting to her. She couldn't believe she was doing this. "Nathan." She swings open the door.
He sat on lazy boy recliner tucked away in the corner of the room with his feet up and his eyes closed. His phone lay on his armrest. She guessed right, he was on a conference call. She shut the door and moved in front of him. "Nathan."
He opens his eyes and lets them travel her body for a moment. It made her feel self-conscious. She did lose some weight, maybe too much weight.
"Get out." He says sternly.
She shakes her head. "Not until you let me explain."
He sits up putting his legs on each side of the recliner. He laces his fingers together and rests his elbows on his thighs. "I don't want to hear it." He pinches his brows together. This is exactly what she expected him to do, completely shut her out, give her no chance to speak.
"I didn't cheat on you." She blurts out quickly knowing her next words were critical. Those were the most important. That's what he needed to hear.
He laughs. "So I've heard. Denial now? Is that the next stage?"
"I'm telling the truth. Judd confessed his love for me like a crazy person. The pictures make it look worse than it really is."
He says nothing and glares at her. He was listening she realized.
"I would never do that to you."
He puts his index finger in front of his mouth suddenly, telling her to be quiet. He then hits the mute button on his phone. "Yes, I'm here."
She had completely tuned out the conversations that were coming from his phone.
"I agree with Curtis, it was a good point to raise. Change it." He orders someone on the phone and puts it back on mute.
"Sabrina, I'm immune to your bullshit now, so save it, and get out."
"How could you be this way? It's not fair that you've given me no chance to defend myself. You should know how newspapers falsely report things."
"I gave you days to defend yourself..." He snarls. "Then you want to disrupt me at my office and act like everything is fine and dandy..."The veins on his temples were beginning to protrude.
"I did call. It went to voicemail. I thought you were still angry."
"You couldn't call again? Maybe leave a message. Maybe I had no reception, maybe I was going through a tunnel, and what about the tabloids? How did you miss that one?"
"I had no idea. The last thing I was thinking about was entertainment news. I honestly was going to tell you what happened, I just had a lot on my mind, and forgot."
"Forgot! He shouts. "You simply forgot to pick up the phone and tell me my cousin confessed his love to you? Don't you think that's the first thing a wife should have done? Maybe you forgot how to use a phone. The dumbest man wouldn't believe you, Sabrina."
She bows her head and looks at the floor. There were many people in the house. He needed to calm down, but she no longer possessed the power to calm him.
"I was angry too." She keeps trying to defend herself. "I didn't call because I was angry and I needed space. Once I felt like I could think straight again, I called you and booked a flight back home. I would never cheat on you."
He puts his index finger on his mouth again. "Yes, I'm here. Work out an arrangement with them, see if you can get it for a cheaper price." One of the men on the other end agreed and Nathan muted the phone again. He leans back in his chair and pinches the bridge of his nose.
Before he opened his mouth to speak she spoke first. "I admit, it was stupid not to call. I let my anger, and stubbornness get the best of me. I never thought something like this could ever happen."
"Of course not, because you think I'm just some fucking idiot whose stupidly transfixed with you."
"No, I knew you might have killed Judd if I weren't there to stop you."
He stands up and sticks his hands in his pockets. "I did almost kill him until I realized that you weren't worth it."
That hurt, and this was getting nowhere. There was nothing she could say that was going to get this man to believe her. He hated her.
She really did mess things up for herself. She should have never left Nathan's side.
Her eyes drop to the floor.
"Mr. Alden... Mr. Alden... Sir?..." A woman's voice comes from the phone
She glances up. Instead of answering the phone, he was staring at her angrily.
"I don't know what you're still doing here. We have nothing to discuss. We're done, there's nothing between us anymore, and there is not a thing you can say that is going to change that." He turns his back and picks up his phone. "I'm sorry. Can you repeat that?"
She should give up and go back to the life she was trying to build without him but she just couldn't move.
She kept staring at his broad muscular back through his dress shirt. They will never be together again, but there was the here and now. She could maybe have one more night with him.
She's crazy to even think that he would even let her near him, but she was going to try. Just one more night, she kept repeating over and over in her mind. One more night with the man she loves, the man she will never get be with again. One more memory for her to hold on to forever.
