Her Revenge Contract -
Chapter 25
Katherine's
POV
My gaze snapped toward John and Rose, both looking at me in shock.
They never expected me to fight back and that in public.
Rose carefully moved toward Erika's side, and helped her to her feet, then without a word, Rose pulled Erika out of the ballroom to have her cleaned up.
Xavier smiled and pulled me toward the stage, and the spotlight shined on us.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Xavier spoke next to me, and he gave me a small smile.
"We apologize for the bit of family drama here tonight, and I guess you all wonder what is going on..?"
The crowd of people nodded and whispering could be heard.
My heart bounced uncontrollably in my chest, worried about what these rich people would think. Our family name was just pulled through the mud, and that was because of my so-called cousin's big mouth and jealousy. "We, Ms. Kate King, and I could not announce our relationship sooner..." Xavier said and moved his gaze over the sea people, who were all now listening attentively to him.
"Ms. Kate and I wanted to have this welcoming party in recognition of her and her only, for taking over the responsibilities of her father's company. It is a great honor."
Xavier took the microphone to his chest, closed his eyes, and nodded his head as if he had already decided what his next words would be...
When Xavier opened his eyes, I knew there was trouble coming...
"I guess the cat is out of the bag," Xavier said laughing, and the crowd chuckled with him, "on a more serious note, Ms. Kate and I had originally decided to formally announce our engagement next month..."
My mind wandered off and my gaze moved over the sea of people, in search of my so-called family.
I had stopped listening to the rest of Xavier's speech, knowing the whole thing was just an act...
Or was it? Was Xavier serious? My mind raced back to our earlier argument, and I nervously shifted in my spot.
Xavier would dare, would he?
We were technically already mated... but will he play me for a fool and claim me?
I shook my head... Xavier was a gentleman... even if he acted aloof around everyone else...
My gaze found my family at the back of the room, and the worry of seconds ago disappeared as I started to read each of their facial expressions.
Rose stared at me blankly out of shock, shaking her head from side to side, not believing that Xavier picked me over Erika.
John's face was frozen between a mixture of annoyance and irritation... and Erika's facial expression was full of hate. She was noticeably grinning through her teeth, and I could feel the vibes of hate from the distance I stood. Erika suddenly burst out in tears and ran out the door.
Did I miss something?
My gaze snapped toward Xavier, and a small taunting smile played in the corners of his lips.
At the end of Xavier's speech, the group of people congratulated us and we walked toward our table, waiting to be served our food.
The DJ started playing some music, and the people went back into dancing.
"Alpha," Greyson called, and Xavier shifted his attention toward him.
"Yes?" He answered.
"Would you mind if I took Kerry for a dance?" Greyson asked.
"No," he answered, "have fun..."
"Are you sure?"
"I am," Xavier answered and pulled my chair from the table, and helped me to take a seat.
Greyson nodded his head and turned toward a group of wolves standing against the wall. He signaled them and they nodded their heads.
As soon as Greyson and Kelly left for the dance floor, Xavier headed towards the bar to get us some drinks.
On his return, Rose spotted him and she came rushing to his side with a concerned face.
"Alpha Xavier," she said and stopped him as he handed me my drink.
What now? I internally growled. Couldn't they leave us in peace?
"I would like to apologize for my daughter's behavior. She was a bit reckless just now..." Rose said, looking regretful.
A bit? Really? She had been reckless from the very start! I internally growled.
Rose turned to me and grabbed hold of my hands, and tears came running down her face.
"Kate," she said, and I scrunched my eyebrows confused, "you will have a good home with Alpha Xavier. I am very happy for you. Your mother's spirit will rejoice in heaven, now that she knows you have found yourself a handsome and wealthy man..." John walked closer and handed Rose a tissue and she wiped her nose before she continued.
"I had the privilege of seeing you grow into a beautiful woman. You are like a daughter I never had," She cried.
I narrowed my eyes at her, yet I kept quiet, even though I was burning inside me to rip her head off.
John's arm snaked around his mate's waist supportively and she continued. Visit Job n i b.com to read the complete chapters for free.
"Rest assured that your uncle and I will do everything in our power to give you the most memorable mating ceremony possible..."
I was a little bewildered by her sudden words and I gently pulled my hands from her grip and responded with a small smile. Rose turned her gaze toward Xavier.
"Since you are practically family, do you have time to have dinner with us tomorrow night?" she asked.
Why she always uses the word family to manipulate people is beyond me. Everyone could see this was just some act.
When Xavier didn't respond to her request, she left and returned with Erika by her side a minute later.
"Erika, apologize to your cousin Kate and her fiance, Alpha Xavier, this instance!" Rose demanded. Erika glared at me and rolled her eyes.
I knew she wouldn't apologize.
"Why should I apologize to her, mother?" Erika roared, "She had no valid reason to lift her hands and assault me!"
I growled under my breath, and the same warmth flowed through my veins as I got to my feet.
I suddenly had the urge to rearrange Erika's face for her.
"Do you have any idea what you have done?" I yelled, "You almost smeared the good name of King Enterprises through the mud! You will make us lose everything if you keep your act up!"
Rose's face whitened at my words. She never thought of how badly her daughter's actions could look for the company.
"Erika, apologize! NOW!" John roared from behind her.
"I-I-I'm s-s-sorry," Erika stuttered and ran out, crying.
A mocking smile followed on Xavier's lips before he turned to John and Rose.
"I will join you for dinner tomorrow night to discuss the details of our engagement..." he said, and John and Rose excused themselves.
"Why did you announce our engagement?" I whispered to Xavier when John and Rose were out of sight.
Xavier put his glass of wine down and turned to me.
"If the new heir of the company has power behind her, the people in the office will try and stab you in the back. John will try his best to make you look bad and make you lose the trust of the board of directors. They will eventually try and force you out of the office..."
Xavier sat forward and cocked his head to the side.
"By announcing our engagement in front of so many people, especially wolves, means that I am in full support of you. Even if John makes things difficult for you, the board of directors will weigh their options before taking drastic measures..." "Why?" I asked.
Xavier sat back and lifted his glass to his lips, and the small devils that were there earlier returned to his eyes.
"Rumor has it that the CEO of Black Umbrella Enterprises signed the biggest deal with CrossFire Enterprises in Europe last week," Xavier said, and the corner of his lips twitched."
He planned this... that is why he never told me where he was, keeping it an uprise on his return.
"The board of directors will overlook your mistakes and would rather try and influence you to get me to sign a subcontract with them..." Xavier continued.
"How do you know all of this?" I asked.
A cheeky smile played on Xavier's lips.
"I have told you I have eyes and ears everywhere, even in King Enterprises..." Xavier answered.
Greyson and Kelly came and joined us, and soon our table was packed with the other guests. Xavier introduced me to the people at our table, and most of them were the board directors working in my company.
The wine and alcohol flowed, and everyone around us became cheerful as they ate and drank.
Later that night, when everyone left, Xavier's driver took us home.
"Do you have other plans besides the ones we discussed?" I asked curiously.
Xavier turned his gaze toward me and looked at me with interest, and for a minute, I wondered what he saw in me. It wasn't just the bond that was keeping us together.
"When you have taken full control of King Enterprises, it will be more convenient for me to intervene and help you regain everything you want..." he answered.
I nodded my head and turned my gaze to look out of the window.
That was all I wanted to hear, and the only reason why I survived their brutal torture and humiliation at my family's hands.
I needed to gain control over all the companies my father established, and once the job was done, all my shares would be handed over to Xavier, as payment for helping me.
Yet, I knew even if I was able to scoop everything under my family's noses, this was only the beginning of my revenge...
