Karina almost wanted to storm over to Kieran's room and confront him right then and there, but Wilfred stopped her.

"Going now won't get you what you want. Kieran is still in the ICU, unconscious. Showing up there will only cause trouble." Karina finally began to calm down.

She knew every move she made was being watched. Though the gossip in the hospital had died down, countless eyes were still on her.

Until Kieran woke up and her name was cleared, she couldn't risk going near him. If anything happened, the blame would undoubtedly fall back on her.

Karina sat back down, covering her face with her hands as she slumped for a moment. "Thank you, Dr. Wilfred. I wasn't thinking things through."

After a brief pause, she looked at him and added, "I'm lucky to have you here."

Wilfred's gaze flickered slightly, and after a long moment, he said, "You're my chosen assistant, of course I'll help you. Don't worry, a simple urine test will be enough to confirm the cause." But even something as simple as that wasn't going to be easy.

When they mentioned conducting a urine test on Kieran, Mrs. Stone vehemently objected. "You're not doing any of that nonsense to my son! Karina, if you have any conscience left, tell this man to leave!" Karina frowned. "We're just here to conduct a test, nothing else. Why are you so determined to stop us?"

"He's in this state because of you! Who would believe anything you say?"

When Karina refused to send Wilfred away, Mrs. Stone's eyes darted around before she raised her voice and began shouting to the people nearby.

"Come and look, everyone! It's her-our adopted daughter! Just a few days ago, she put my son in the hospital. And now, that's not enough for her. She wants to hurt him even more!"

A crowd began to gather.

Some recognized Karina and pointed at her while whispering among themselves.

"I know her. That's the one. I heard she put someone in the hospital just because she was unhappy about a couple of words."

"What an ungrateful brat!"

"See, I've always said adopting a daughter is pointless. People want sons to carry on the family name and take care of them when they're old. They already have a son, so why take in someone else's problem? That's just asking for trouble."

The chaotic voices filled Karina's ears, but they no longer stung.

She had heard these kinds of things so many times that they had lost their impact.

But the real reason she didn't feel as hurt was because she wasn't alone.

Wilfred, standing beside her, fixed a cold gaze on Mrs. Stone. Unlike Karina, he wasn't one to tolerate nonsense.

"This is a hospital," he said coolly. "Following the doctor's orders is the most basic requirement. Besides, you're also required to cooperate with the police investigation.

"If you don't like it, you're welcome to move your son out of here. That'll free up a bed for someone else and save us the trouble."

His sharp tone left no room for argument, and his words were utterly merciless.

Mrs. Stone's face turned pale, then red with anger. She pointed at him, trembling. "You! How can you call yourself a director and not care about my son's life?"

Wilfred smirked mockingly. "Why would I care about his life? I'm not his father."

His words stunned everyone, including Karina.

For a moment, the coldness in his eyes was almost terrifying, and it was the first time Karina realized just how sharp Wilfred's tongue could be. But she had to admit that it was satisfying.

"You're all in this together! You and

this ungrateful brat are plotting to harm my son. I won't let you get away with it. If you want to get past me, you'll have to step over my bodyTM Mrs. Stone declared, blocking the doorway.

Wilfred moved instantly, his stance purposeful.

Startled, Mrs. Stone thought he was serious and instinctively dodged out of the way.

Wilfred casually pulled back his foot, slid his hands into his pockets, and let his long white coat sway with an air of effortless confidence. "Didn't you say I'd have to step over you? But now that I'm about to, you're the one backing down."
