Ben wanted nothing more than to wring Jamie's neck after hearing her cold, cutting words.

"I don't need your lectures," he growled.

Human nature? Didn't she think he knew enough about it already? He had seen it in every case he handled, and he had learned it the hardest way through her betrayal.

When he fell for Jamie, it had been with the intent to marry her, to share a future. But she had stabbed him in the back without hesitation. And yet, when he tried to hate her, tried to wish for her downfall, he couldn't bring himself to follow through. "Stay here and reflect on your actions, Jamie."

Ben knew her well enough. If she cried, begged for forgiveness, he would soften. But she didn't. Instead, all she cared about was that child, the child he refused to acknowledge.

"Fine," he thought grimly. "Let's see how long that bastard can survive."

Meanwhile, Ben's mother, Mrs. Lucas, had failed to convince him to cut ties with Jamie. This left her in a tough spot, especially with Summer Larson.

Summer, the woman she had handpicked for Ben, came from a reputable family. She was everything a Lucas wife should be-cultured, poised, and fiercely loyal. But no matter how perfect she was, Ben wouldn't even glance her way, let alone give her the time of day. Summer, however, wasn't ready to give up. She understood Jamie's hold on Ben. Jamie was the one he had loved since youth, his unattainable ideal. Still, Summer wasn't deterred. She believed love unblessed by parents would never last, and with Mrs. Lucas on her side, she could carve a place for herself in Ben's life.

"Is Ben busy lately? I haven't seen him at the firm," Summer asked delicately, though she suspected he was with Jamie.

Mrs. Lucas sighed, deciding to be blunt. "Summer, you're a good girl, and I adore you. But with that Jamie, I don't know what kind of spell she's put on him."

She thought of the paternity test results she had tampered with. Without that precaution, Ben might have already welcomed Jamie and her son into his home. Fortunately, Jamie's child had been taken away by Winnie.

As long as Charlie and Winnie didn't make it back, Jamie would lose the only two family members she had left. The blow would be unbearable for her. She would break, crumble under the weight of such loss, and eventually lose her sanity, perhaps even her life. And once Jamie was out of the picture, Ben wouldn't have a reason to keep her around.

Summer understood the gravity of the situation. If even Mrs. Lucas couldn't change Ben's mind, how could she? What power did she have to sway him or shift his feelings?

Yet, the thought of giving up wasn't something she could entertain. Letting go simply wasn't an option for her.

Summer refused to back down.

"Then, let me talk to him face to face, Mrs. Lucas. Even if he insists on keeping Jamie around, we can create a facade to ease everyone's concerns. Once I'm officially Mrs. Lucas, I can secure my place? Maybe even have a child with him and then, he won't have a reason to look back at Jamie."

Summer was determined to use time and circumstance to her advantage. After all, beauty fades, and Ben's obsession with Jamie would eventually wane.

Ben wasn't willing to listen to Mrs. Lucas anymore, and their relationship had already soured. Expecting him to come back on her call was futile.

He wasn't coming back.

Naturally, Mrs Lucas didn't want Summer to go looking for him either. The last thing she wanted was for Summer to get hurt in the process. "Don't go after him. I'll handle Ben. He's not thinking clearly right now, and I'm afraid he might lash out at you."

Summer, with her gentle demeanor and impeccable family background, was the ideal candidate for Ben's wife. If she became Mrs. Lucas, and if Ben ever returned to the business world, the Larson family's support would undoubtedly propel the Lucas family's success to greater heights.
