BOOK6 Chapter5

He didn't notice the expression on Rachel's face-a mix of mockery, playful teasing, and a sense of triumph.

"Let's not talk about that first thing in the morning."

Michael's voice was ice-cold, filled with deep resentment.

"A filthy woman like Phoebe Barnes-just saying her name makes me sick."

His words hit me like a bolt of lightning, making it clear that Michael

Hayes had harbored hatred for me for four years.

Rachel Green offered an apologetic smile. "Alright, alright, don't get upset, honey. It's my fault... I often feel insecure and end up comparing myself."

Michael turned to her, gently pulling her into his arms, soothing her instead. "There's no need to compare. You and the baby are my everything. Meeting Phoebe Barnes is the biggest regret of my life! I only wish I had seen through her wickedness sooner. "Okay, let's not talk about it anymore," he said, just as they were about to kiss. Suddenly, a frantic knock on the door interrupted them.

"Open the door! Open up, Michael Hayes, open this door!"

I froze, a cold sweat breaking out as recognized the voice-it was my mother!

Michael's face twisted in disgust, and Rachel's expression darkened

instantly. After a moment of tense silence, Michael begrudgingly went to open the door.

"What's with all the banging? It's early in the morning! Aren't you worried about the neighbors seeing this?!"

When he opened the door, I was stunned.

After four years, my mother looked frail, her hair completely white, her body thin as a rail.

Tears welled in her eyes, her face red with anguish, and with a thud,

she fell to her knees, clutching at Michael's pant leg, begging

desperately.

"Please, Michael, I'm begging you! My husband is critically ill, and they're going to stop treatment today if we don't pay! Please, lend me some money, save him!"

"You once called me 'Mom' when you married my daughter. Please, for the sake of that, help us, I'm begging you!"

Her pleas only fueled Michael's anger. Ignoring any past connection, he yanked her into the room and slammed the door shut, lashing out

at her.

"Hah! You've got some nerve to come begging me! Have you forgotten

that four years ago, your daughter ran off to another country with some rich guy from our company, taking a fortune with her and leaving me in the dust?"

"You two raised that daughter of yours to bring nothing but trouble into my life! She left me in debt, and now you dare ask me for help?!"

Watching my mother sob uncontrollably tore my heart apart.

I rushed to her side, trying to hold her up, but my hands passed through her body over and over again. She couldn't feel me at all.
